Smile

So... I was reading this book I have (most of you might have it) and they had these poll results in some of the pages... SO FUN! I was so excited about this... But anyway, did you know...

* That 1 in 5 children with DS play a musical instrument? For children older than ten, that number doubles. One of five children with DS sing in a choir or vocal group, for children older than ten, it is every one in three... I'm a walking musical statistic, and I'm telling you, that's better than the "average" kid!!!

* Two out of every three children with DS like to draw and/or paint pictures

* Approx. 9 out of every 10 individuals with DS listened to someone read a book more than three times a week between the ages 2-5

* Approx. 7 out of 1o children w/ DS use total communication (signs, etc) between the ages of 2-5

* Approx. 7 out of 10 kids with DS saw a speech therapist two or more times a week between the ages of 2 and 5

* Approx. 1 of every 3 children with DS older than ten rides a bike without training wheels (Hell I was nine myself)

* Seven of every ten individuals with DS older than ten participates on an athletic team through Special Olympics

* Two out of every five individuals with DS participates on an integrated athletic team.

* According to their families, 3 out of 5 individuals with DS know how to operate a computer.

* One of every three individuals with DS older than ten w/ DS reads the daily newspaper on his or her own

* Seven of ten individuals with DS older than 10 read books on their own for personal enjoyment

* One of two children with DS go to school in a mainstreamed class.

* 3 of 5 children with DS participate in school activities that are open to all students.

* According to their families, 1 of 5 children with DS talk on the phone with friends more than three times a week. For children older than ten, that number doubles.

* One of three children with DS write email regularly

* Two of three children with DS over age ten have a boyfriend or girlfriend!

* Approx. 7 of ten children with DS pray on a regular basis.

* According to their families, approx. 7 of 10 individuals with DS imitate characters from a television program or movie

* Approx. 2 of 3 individuals with DS older than 10 prepare their own breakfast each morning.

* Three of four individuals with DS older than 10 make their own bed in the morning.

* One of two individuals with DS (older than 18) work in a non sheltered workplace

* One of five individuals with DS (18 or older) lives on his or her own

*** Of course, all our kiddos are unique, and they do their best- I just thought this was very fun and nice to know just how "normal" our kids really are.

Oh man! Angela is SO into music. I hope she can play an instrument, because she's completely tone deaf when it comes to singing!

Wow, cool stats. Leah, you are so funny, you always get me for a good laugh! Avery is also very musical. She has been in a music class since she was three mos. Her sister started this year and is in the older class. We have to spend the last 15 minutes observing and participating in Mackenzie's class. Well a couple of weeks ago Miss Jill picks up a drum and plays a musical pattern to get the kids to tell her what she played. Before anyone could respond Avery crawls over to the drum and plays it back to her! She was amazed and even brought it up to the class that Avery has been in music for a while and she did it right. The next day she brought it up again to the baby class! Can you tell Avery is the teacher's pet?

I wish I was born with Down syndrom..I'm 37 and don't know how to ride a bike or play any instrument.
I'm sure Max will teach me and hold the bike for me.

Wounderful information!!!
Max doctor told me the day we were discharge from the hospital.
"I want for you to tell Max...Max you are getting better everyday and every way. Kisses from Dr. Scooter"
He drives an scotter in the hospital (texas children hosp) he is old and the hospital is big. But he walks just fine. He is a caracter.
Also he told me "Max is Max" and you can't compare him with anyone.

Amanda

They are amazing statistics.....

I'm off to our M&T group this morning. I'll bring a few copies with me. I'm sure this will give the other mom's something to smile about.

I too love the music one. Robert will be playing the piana soon. He amazes me with music. Also liked the prayer one.

Thanks for posting

My son is already planning how to teach Talitha how to play the XBox, Stefanie is going to teach her to sing, Nikki is going to teach her to ride horses and I am sure as soon as she is old enough she will join in the fight for who gets the computer next. Plus she has a choice of guitar, drums, flute, trumpet and keyboard and that's just at home!!

Renee and others...

The book is "Common Threads" It's from the Band of Angels press- As far as books go, it is a very beautiful book- Hardcover, with binding, etc... It's actually more of a DS photography book, with a few articles and musings thrown in... Throughout the book, there are little facts... It's a GREAT book!
http://www.bandofangels.org (i think) They also have a few other items that are really neat!!!

Another fun ds fact...

Courtney can beat the other 5 people in this family at any XBOX game she plays... Her favorites are Wrestlemania, Spiderman 2, and Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets. She is one coordinated girl with the XBOX! I couldn't even attempt to be as good as her!!!
