I always hoped Ben would have nice straight teeth and up until today it seemed that he would have. But I happened to notice today that he has a new front tooth coming through behind his existing front teeth. He doesn't have any wobbly teeth - in fact they seem really strongly growing there! The new tooth seems to be growing behind and between the front teeth - not just behing an existing tooth. Has anyone's child had this happen? I really really hope that somehow the new tooth will eventually move into a good place.....do you think it will??? Crying or Very sad

Angela's 8 front teeth came in this way...all behind the baby teeth. One was already in, the others on xray were soon to be in, but were coming in waaaay behind the others. Also eventhough her adult teeth were ready to come in, not one of her baby teeth was loose. So she had all her front teeth pulled so the new ones would come in where they were supposed to. Our pediatric dentist specializes in kids who have DS or Autism, and he said kids with DS have a tendancy to hang onto their teeth! LOL

Her front teeth are pretty crooked, and we're just how embarking on the road of orthodontics.

Shawn has not lost any teeth yet, and is showing no sign of any coming in. our dentist also said our little ones lose teeth late. And they may have to probablybe pulled out. I also am a one that always thought and hoped Shawn would have nice teeth. Not so sure now he is a tumb sucker and we are trying to break that. But besides that. By husband has a great theroy which I am sure he just says to shut me up because I worry about everything when it comes to Shawn. "Worry about the things we can't fix" and we can fix his teeth if we need to!!!! I thought ummm... he is right.. so that was one less worry.. I am not trying to make the issue a no concern because I know it is.. It is for me as well. I know that I will have to have Shawn put to sleep and have his baby teeth pulled out. maybe you could talk to his dentist about that before they come in further. Just a thought.
Hope that helps,
Christy

Leah S., I would be very interested in learning who your dentist is that specializes in kids with DS. I live in the Bloomington area and I really would prefer my daughter to see someone like this.

As a matter of fact, Kayla lost her 1st tooth this morning. I was in the shower and she kept saying "toof, toof" and I pulled the curtain back and there she had it in her hand. I didnt even know she had a loose one. She never said anything about it. It didnt seem to scare her or anything. I am really surprised that she lost one 2 weeks after her 6th birthday. It took forever for all of her baby teeth to come in! I don't see an adult tooth underneath it though.

I thik this is pretty common with our kids.Hannah has had four fall out on their own. A few weeks ago she had to have seven baby teeth pulled because they would not fall out.Her mouth was quite a mess but now it looks a lot better. She had space maintainers placed and hopefully things will fall into place.

Ethan is having his 2 front teeth pulled next week for that very reason. He has his first permanent tooth growing in behind his 2 front baby teeth. The dentist said they probably wouldn't come out on their own because usually the permanent teeth come up right underneath and help push the baby teeth out, but when they come in behind, that doesn't happen. So hopefully pulling them wil let the permanant teeth move where they need to be. He said if they were more loose(one tooth is a tiny bit loose) he might just leave them to come out naturally, but since it doesn't seem like that will happen anytime soon, it is best to go ahead and pull them now.We also see a pediatric dentist who specializes in kids with special needs. Good luck!

William just had his lower front tooth pulled a few weeks ago b/c of the tooth coming in behind it. I made my husband take him, I just didn't have it in me to listen to his tears. I was sad when they had to pull his tooth b/c he has such cute little teeth and a cute smile and now his teeth will be all over the place. Sigh.

His former jerk dentist even suggested that we would never have to worry about orthodontia b/c of William having down syndrome. Whatever!! We left that practice! Sorry, off on a tangent.

Anyway, William will have to have another tooth pulled soon b/c the tooth is coming in behind again. Poor baby!

Take care!!

Libby

Oh NO!! I really didn't want to hear that he'd have to have some teeth pulled out! How did your littel ones cope with the procedure? Were they put to sleep or just numbed? I really can't imagine how Ben will cope..... Crying or Very sad

Wow, what a dumba**! Even if their teeth are straight, most kids with DS do need orthodontic work for the very common underbite and small palate.

Christina, I think what that jerk dentist was implying was that since William has Ds, he looks different anyway, why try to fix his teeth or make his teeth look nice when he already looks different. Did that make sense? It's hard for me to articulate what this guy's thoughts were. You should have seen how he said it and the tone. Oh, I was pissed off (excuse me).

Take care!

Libby

I wonder if we had the same dentist? I fired mine and made sure he knew why!

Anthony's front baby teeth are crowded so we know we are in for braces.... *sigh*..... why not all his sibs so far needed them Shocked

Our Pul Doc and a local Ortho are working closely together on the benefits of ortho appliances to create more space in the mouth and bring the jaw forward so that people with mild to moderate sleep apnea don't have their jaws falling back while they sleep causing sleep apena. A man in our church went through this and man it made is life better and you can see a big difference in his facial appearance. When we are ready to start we are going to start with that Ortho.
