How much time is your child in "special ed" room

Briar's end of the year meeting is coming up and I have a feeling that this is going to be a issue where we but heads AGAIN. He is in Kindergarden now and will be going to the first grade. He is in what the school calls resource (special ed) for 1 hour a day. To me that is enough. I want him to spend as much time in class as possible with his friends. Not to mention I have been told many times that all he does in resource is watch 101 dalmations while the special ed teacher sits behind a desk eatting. SORRY I will not go there.

For all you who read my posts about school. Please do not let all my gripes about school influence or make you nervous about your child starting school. There are great schools I am sure that will help in any way they can. My son's is just not in one.

thanks

Kayla is in a special ed room full time, but for next year I'm going to try to go 1/2 day special ed, 1/2 day integrated.

Kallie is in the SPED cluster room full time. We did inclusion for Kindy and two years of 1st grade. 2nd grade prooved to be too fast paced for her and she got overwhelmed and very frustrated to say the least. I say go for what you feel is going to work best for your child. I know all special ed classes are different but with that said Kallie has made SO much progress since we made the decision to put her in there full time. She is still working on 2nd grade curriculim, still has homework, and still is tested. Just at her own pace. For instance, if they are working on double digit addition and she hasn't gotten that concept yet, why would they push on double digit subration? They continue to meet her where she is at and build from there. Good luck with your decision.

Henry is nearly 100% in self contained classroom -- will try for more inclusion for next year (when he will be in first grade)

Alex is still in ECDD full time. He is very delayed, and has a boatload of sensory issues, as well as ADHD, so he is being "remediated" for preschool type social and learning skills. We are hoping to get him integrated part time into Kindy when he's 7.

Nicole is finishing her second year of Kindy, and she is in the special ed class 1 1/2 hrs a day, they said at her IEP this week that in first grade she will more then likely go in that class a little longer because they are learning alot more and faster in first. They don't get to play as much it is more get down to work. But we are very lucky to have a great special ed teacher that is always thinking of ways to get Nicole to learn. Good luck!

Currently Dylon is in Pre K and in an inclusion classroom however, this may be changing for the second part of the school term. He has excellent teachers A regular Ed teacher, A Spec. Ed. teacher and a teachers aide. You stated that his teacher has him watch 101 dalmations. Remeber you have every right to go up to the school and see what your child is doing. Each week I go the school school once or twice different days and times and montior dylon to see how he is doing in school. Once teachers see that you are an involved parent and concerned this gives them a wake up call.

No time in a special ed classroom. She gets pulled for speech but everything else is the typical 2nd grade classroom. Her spec. ed teacher comes to her.

Mackenzie is in kindergarten and she is in a regular class with an one on one aide. She doesn't spend any time in the special ed room. I actually went to observe the class a couple weeks ago and i was very happy with what i saw. I was very worried she would be more separated from the kids but she was included in everything. She has an amazing teacher and aide.

Hayden is in a lifeskills class but has a lot of inclusion time with a kindy class. He eats lunch with them, music, art, playtime and reading with them. He apparently gets quite distracted in the kindy class and does much better with one on one learning.

Matt is in a mainstream class 30 kids and he is the only one with special needs. He gets a 1:1 aide most of the day and he does great there. Considering he also has autism, it is amazing how well he is doing!

I'd say he is in the 'spec ed' room probably around 1/2-1 hour per day. He is able to join in with the other kids with literacy and numeracy and for PE. However, for other subjects he may or may not stay with the class, and sometimes uses the little room with his aide.

I guess you have to go with what you feel Briar can cope with. I'm amazed Matt copes as well as he does. However, other people under-estimate our kids way more than we do, so push for whatever you feel Briar needs.

Good luck x

Nick goes to 'learning support' for 1 hour a day split into 2 1/2 hours. He also leaves his K class for PT, OT, and speech. I really dont know how I feel about it. I want him in the reg ed class as much as possible but his learning is so limited in there because of all the distractions. The 1 on 1 in LS is much better for him. I struggle with this.

Chloe is in a special ed room for her curriculum with a one on one aid all day. She goes to everything that K kids leave the room to do with them. She is also in the K room for snack time and any parties. This is working great for her as she is easily distracted and is very distracting when they are working. She has her own little work area for her and her aid in the special ed room that is closed in with lattice panels but open at each corner so she can still see others in the room but has a quiet place to work. She is in the spc ed room 60 % of the time but it has several diff stations that she enjoys spending time in.
She is a very social person so she really enjoys going to diff rooms during the day and seeing diff people , and of course giving everyone she knows hugs.

Adam is in kindergarten in the morning & Grade 1 in the afternoon, but regular classes. He has an Aide in the Grade one class. He is only pulled from class for speech & OT, which is for a half an hour every 2 weeks. We don't have a special ed. class at our small school.

Rachel is in a special ed program all day. I love the program because it's very structured and doesn't give her any time to misbehave. Also, the learning is geared toward each child's needs. Rachel began the year learning the alphabet and was just moved up to the next reading group- letter sounds. I'm thrilled with the progress I see both in academics and behavior.
