My daughter has started throwing things. She throws everything and sometimes thinks it is hillarious. It scares me though. She has thrown several glass dishes, breaking them. She once tossed a large toy firetruck at my 1 year olds head and she throws her bowls of food on the ground when she is finished. I've tried time outs, I've tried showing her by example, I even bought some very pricey suction cup bowls online. NOTHING helps. Anyone else have this issue or any suggestions? Some days I swear it will drive my absolutely mad!

I'm there with you! Angela usually only throws stuff when she gets mad. Like if I want her to do something (like turn off the t.v.) and she's not ready to, any loose object can and will get thrown. And yes, she has thrown some really heavy stuff! It's getting better, but if she's in a certain mood, I will nonchalantly walk around and collect all throwable objects before I make the request I know is going to set her off.

Angela is a a waiver, and we have replacement costs build into her budget. So..like..if the TV remote goes through a window, we can replace the window. Thankfully we haven't had to do that, but I'm just waiting for the day. Last year she threw a PCA's Ipod in the toilet. (and pca learned to not bring stuff like that to work, which he shouldn't have anyway.)

I am right there also. Kayla threw a cell phone at me yesterday and it hit my ear. I was sitting 2 feet from her and she just wailed it at me. Kayla will do it for no apparent reason. She does it when she is mad, but she was not mad at that particular moment.

Austin is starting to throw things also. He's almost 20 months and his EI teacher told us we need to nip it now. We haven't figured out how to nip it and I'm hoping to get ideas here from your post.

Well, when you figure out how to nip it, let me know! Angela didn't throw stuff when she was younger. It really didn't start until about a couple of years ago. I think that's when she figured out everyone jumps pretty quickly when she's taking aim! She doesn't get what she wants when she throws things, but it sure is hard not to react because you have to move out of the way or save whatever breakable object is about to meet it's demise.

My daghter has been doing it for a while and it is definately not out of anger. Sometimes she thinks its funny and sometimes its like a compultion like she has to do it. Anyone else notice this? I've tried timeouts and they seem to help but only Momentarily it might stop her for an hour but that's it. I don't know would that be called progress?

Talitha throws stuff - not out of anger usually - just because she can I think. It isn't predictable but she ALWAYS gets in trouble when she does throw things as objects often hit one of her siblings. I don't think she realises the consequences of her throwing. She used to throw her plate or bowl as soon as she was finished but with constant consequences that doesn't happen so much any more. I did think for a while that she would never stop. I have also had to stop everyone throwing things because she always copies the worst behaviours. So the other kids are banned from throwing and other behaviours that we need Talitha to cease doing because she can't tell when these things are appropriate or safe to do. Hitting for example, the kids would play hit each other but then Talitha would hit and it would hurt so they understand that they can't do stuff like that when she is around. We do play with balls but we all say 'gentle' and do 'nice' passes to each other when Talitha is playing.

I totally understand. My daughter is 7 and the throwing thing has only been going on like the last 2 years. At first we kind of passed it off as her being in toddler stage since she was like a 2 year old at 5. She does have Autism also so i think that also factors in with enjoying the noise it makes to throw and our reaction. The developmental pediatrician said it was like an impulse and she likes the noise. Her new thing is to throw her toys down the stairs and i think she likes the noise. We've tried absolutely everything time outs, telling her to stop, not reacting at all when she throws but nothing works. Time outs don't phase her and I don't think she understands that it could hurt somebody. It does almost seem like an impulse where she has to do it. She definitely doesn't do it when she's mad. Sometimes she gets laughing like it's fun.

I totally agree with you Lespring now that she is older she realizes that everyone reacts quickly when she throws something and enjoys it but it's hard not to react when she is about to throw the phone. Mackenzie definitely likes the reaction because when we don't react at all when she does throw she will stare at us for a reaction and say "stop it. No Mackenzie don't" It's so frustrating you don't know what to do and the most frustrating part is people don't understand.
