We have our kindergarten IEP next week. We have settled on the classroom assignment, now we need to work on the goals. I have a huge list I want to present, but how much is to much? I want to ensure we have enough to challenge him. Is there any goals from you experience is a must in an IEP? I'm so academic focused I feel i'm missing something.

Can you ask for draft goals to review before the IEP? We are getting them for Grant, and his teacher mentioned things like help at lunch opening milk. We also want to be sure to include social skills, safety concerns, self help skills, and behavior. We asked daycare for suggestions, as well.

Hi,
I am a Special Education teacher and I hope that I can offer you some good advice..take it or leave it, ultimately it is up to you as his mom, you know best!!
You will see the results of his assessments at the meeting. Hopefully, and in most cases, the IEP team will have a good idea on what goals he needs support with. Now, I teach Mild/Moderate High School, so the assessments I give are very different than the assessments for an incoming kindergartener. I image they will want to see shape sorting, listening and response, directionality, fine motor skills (crayon grip, etc..)..

Stay open minded, listen to the assessment results. Ask questions about the actual "tests" they performed to get the results. What was he asked to do, what were they looking for specifically, ask for examples of the incorrect responses he gave, if any. The team should be more than happy to share this information with you. If you don't feel confident, don't sign the IEP right then and there. Ask to take it home to look it over more.
Just remember to breath and let him work at his own pace. See where he needs support, and be assertive about him receiving that support. It is exciting that he will be in Kindergarten, and equally as important as the academics are the social and life skills. One is not more important than the other, in my opinion.

I was just wondering how was your iep meeting?

Hi Supernova,
I was wondering. if there are not goals, in the iep, for reading does that means a child doesn't get pull out for reading?

What i first did was pull the kindergarten goals from the school website and used that for my basis on developing the goals I presented. for example "general ed class" will learn 20 site words while in kindergarten. So we made a goal that he will learn at least 10. The meeting went really well. I loved his pre-school so I'm sad to leaved they were the best to work with and did a lot for Dylan and never gave me an answer of no. So now that we are moving to elementary school we will see, hoping all will go well.

That's what we did. We just had an unofficial (not an ARD) meeting with her regular teacher, special ed teacher & speech therapist today. It seems to be going well. The spec ed teacher pulls her out and reviews the reading/math concepts from the regular class so that she gets the extra repetition she needs. Hope your meeting went well!
