It was time for Becca's 3 year assessments in the fall and I signed off on everything except the IQ testing as I just don't see the need for it. Now I'm told she has reached the age where she can no longer be coded developmental delay and although she came in well below average in every area they say that without the IQ test they cannot code her as having an intellectual disability. I've been threatened with due process and that she could lose all her services including her 1:1. For now they've allowed the code of "other health impairment" (with a doctors letter) since a precedent had been set but they said that is being looked at in our state and may be ruled out as an option in the near future. Any ideas? Can they really force me to submit to a test that I don't want? She's been doing great at her school (although obviously behind) and is fully included with all related services. The threat of due process from them to me when I am perfectly happy with the current situation/people just seems ridiculous to me.

Why don't you want the iq test?

every state has a different requirement for when for the iq test....and yes they are correct. In the state we adopted Devon from it was 9 (must be done by) so he could carry the YCDD (young child with developmental delay) till then in our state it is 6 and I hold off on ours till six not because I am so much afraid of the number but it gives them every chance to become much more familiar with testing tyoe situations and several years school.......
yep they like to do them at three or when enter kgn here but I make them wait, but knowing I can not make them wiat forever ........
and yes it is a number and yes it means nothing.......and yet everything.....funding availibitles...program acess and all those things we need for our kids for later sucess are tied to that test and "not passing" it......
I find it ironic and a double edged sword I have to swallow and deal with whether I like it or not!
Find out your states maximum and go till then..... or go with my alternative plan (though that has not worked out yet..... to win the power ball...be independently wealthy and pay for everything myself including educaiton..... )

Dylan had the IQ test when he went from pre K to K. 3 seems a little young? Dylan needed it to move to K because he did need to be re-classified. To me it means nothing, he is still Dylan no matter what the test said, but it is what was needed for him to continue to receive services.

I don't know why you would be against the IQ test. It doesn't change who she is, it just puts a number to her IQ...we all know that number doesn't define our kids, but their service eligibility requires that number.
Not all of our kids fall into the "intellectual disability" range, there are a lucky few who fall in the normal range of IQ, they would not qualify for services.
So I guess it's really up to you...does she need her services? If so, then I guess you should sign off on the IQ test.

I am against the IQ test because I never want a teacher to see that number first, before they ever meet her, and make assumptions about what she's capable of. Just like any other child, I want her given every opportunity to succeed, and we all know that there have been times when kids like ours were just warehoused in life skills classes based partly on their IQ. She doesn't test well, has trouble focusing and is very inconsistent in her skills. If she has to have an IQ test later in life then maybe I'll change my mind but it's obvious to anyone who works with her or even just observes her that she is delayed. I actually like the option of the OHI code because with our kids it's more than just the intellectual disability. She wouldn't be getting PT, OT and adaptive PE for just a cognitive delay.
I was told that the federal govt. had lowered the age from 9 to 7 for eliminating the developmental delay code. I was told that some states have already ruled that down syndrome cannot fall under OHI but that other states leave it open to interpretation. I don't understand why DS isn't automatically under the OHI code like autism and ADD are. This seems like something worth advocating for whether at the state or federal level.

our state is six......
and ironically you will have to do it..... I do get it .... I really do..... but IQ or not if that is going to be the thing that makes them predjudiced and not the 29 page iep or the entire file drawer that belongs to my son or the other drawer that belonds to my other four....... I really doubt it...... the whole thing I have found is they are or are not willing..... not found to many on the fence~!
But hey maybe just my experience
