Sudden irrational fear...Updated in second paragraph

It's totally normal, right, a developmental milestone that all babies go through? Just usually around 18 months, not 2 1/2? Kyle suddenly started having a complete meltdown whenever we put him in his carseat (in the middle of the bench seat) panicked crying, desperate clinging. You'd think someone had dropped him putting him in! I've compromised with him by just switching carseat spaces with his 4 year old sister so she is now in the middle and he next to the door. No more freak outs but also not as safe... Oh well, he was going to have to give up the prime spot when the new baby came this summer anyways. I guess I just want to make sure this really is a developmental milestone that I'm chalking it up to be.

*****so it's no longer just the carseat issue. He is now deathly afraid of the running bath water. Will SCREAM with terror if he is in the tub and you turn the faucet on, or if you attempt to put him in while it's still running. He will get in the tub if it's off but will not sit down, insists on keeping one hand one the side at all times, and continues a steady nervous laugh/cry the entire time he is in. That is a huge improvement, last week he'd scream throughout the entire bath I've worked constantly with him helping him have fun in the bath. He has a handful of other things, like he freaks out if he is on a high bench or table (like a picnic bench) without a back, he'll cling to you and cry until you take him down. and on the baby swing at the park he used to LOVE going as high as possible, now he freaks out if he is pushed higher then a few inches. I just need someone to tell me this IS just a phase and he WILL eventually grow out of it. ******

It's funny, when I read the title of this post....I instantly thought of my son and his irrational fear of getting in the babysitters car. He's 6 years old now and has traveled plenty over the years. Just this past fall, the babysitter would try and take him to a park or playground for a fun outing. Well, just getting him the backseat of her car was an ordeal. He said he was afraid of her car. One day, they cancelled their trip because he just would not get inside her car. Since then, I've gotten in the backseat with him and he's more relaxed but for whatever reason he gets scared getting in the car. He's done the same thing a few times with my mothers car as well (so it's not a fear of going with the babysitter, it's the fear of her car). The only thing we can think of is we have a big Tahoe so he's used to riding up high in our big truck. Our babysitter (and my mother) have tiny tiny cars....so we are just guessing that has something to do with it. We've worked through it and it doesn't seem to be happening any longer...but for awhile, it was an issue.

No, nothing new. We turned him almost a year ago... sometime last spring. He's been in the same seat in the same car in the same position for almost a year! This came on about a week ago, nothing new about our routine, I swear he thinks he's going to be dropped as we lift him up and over! Once he's in his seat he's fine but his terror was so great it was all but impossible to get him to let go of me to get him in it... hence moving him over next to the door :-/

Ragan did/does the same thing. We think he might have started seeing his reflection in the window and it scared him. But really we have no clue for sure what prompted the irrational fear. After several months he doesn't seem to be as fearful. I guess we just pushed through it.

I know a little girl who has auditory sensory issues, different from Melissa's. It seems most kids with DS, who have auditory sensory issues, don't like babies crying or screaming, dogs barking, loud crowds or loud laughter. ( These sounds send Melissa over the edge. ) The little girl I know does not like the sounds of riding in a car or a bus. She also does not like musical type toys or talking toys. They hurt her ears. I bought a singing , animated Care Bear for her and she wouldn't play with it, because she couldn't tolerate the mechanical sound it made. You know what I mean.? That constant whirring sound? I think it's the whirring type sound that bothers her. The bath also has a loud steady crashing sound. Just like the car or the bus has that constant, humming , whirring sound.

I don't know. Just a thought. I hope you can figure out what is causing this fear for him. It has to be really tough not knowing.

Hugs to you.

Michelle

So can I add another new fear... Women wearing Dark Blue Hospital Scrubs. Okay, this one is actually a RATIONAL fear, he's in the hospital right now (for low blood sugar) and the first two veins they tried to get a line in blew out. So third times a charm with a hysterically crying 2 year old Sad. Now any time one of the nurses is in eye sight he trembles and hides his face and screams if I actually insist he let them look him over. At our hospital different workers wear different colors, he flirts with the aides in their light blue scrubs and tolerates the doctors in their white lab coats and looks forward to room service in their tan scrubs but screams when a woman in dark blue scrubs approaches him. It's solved one portion of my concern over his sudden fears, obviously his memory has gotten better. so perhaps something I didnt deem as a threat but in his two year old brain appeared threatening to him with the bath and middle car seat he's remembered those as danger zones (just like the nurses who repeatedly stuck his hand, then other hand, then finally arm) hence the sudden fears. I'm going with that. It's the only explanation that has satisfied me so far... His memory is expanding so something that was scary one random time appears forever scary to him, because his memory is EXPANDING not perfected Smile
