Repeating Kindergarten

I know many of our kids repeat Kindergarten but have any of your kids repeated it for a third time? Everyone agress that Nick is no where near ready for the 1st grade but the school seems to think they can't keep him back again. I don't know how I feel or what I think about this yet....anybody's little one do this?

Repeating Kindergarten

My son is 5 and due to a late birthday he is currently in Pre-Kindergarten. Has the school said why they can't keep him back? In addition, have they offered any extra services considering he has been held back previously? I am trying to look forward to what is ahead?

Recap of Nick - he has ADHD on top of DS. He was born prematurely (27 wks) and just before K started in 07 he was hospitalized because of dehydration and he went into cardiac arrest....

So he seems to have some mental health issues and his behaviors really limit him. He is also very limited verbally and in communication.

He has an IA, TSS, PT, OT, speech, and goes to a learning support environment 2xday for 1/2 hr each time.

The principal said that if he would have to stay back he would have to go to a life skills environment (which means one of the other elementary schools). I said...oh what rule is that? Meaning is that a Dept of Ed rule or a school thing? He said..well, there isn't a rule but that is what would have to happen....so that is where my question is coming from.

He is just learning soooo slowly and each day is a new surprise because we don't know what is mood or behaviors are going to be like (another discussion in itself).

By the way...we are in PA.

The thing that would concern me the most is that the schools will only teach them until the year they turn 21. Which means that if he repeats kindergarten again, he will only be able to stay back one more time in the entire 12 more years of schooling. If he needs that extra time later to get the necessary credits for high school graduation that could come back to haunt you.

By the IDEA laws, they have to place him in the LRE (least restrictive environment). They cannot say they are putting him in a certain placement simply because he is repeating the year, they have to prove that the placement is the LRE for him. Contact your local ARC if you need an advocate to go with you to his IEP meetings and make it harder for the principal to ignore the law.

Thanks...that is my concern too (about going until 21). Like I said I don't know what I feel is right at this point and we do have until the end of this year so things may be extremely different by then. I am the VP at our local Arc so I will be talking to my people there. I just wondered if anyone else did this or if anyone knew of any "rules" on this. Thanks again I hope the answers on what is right for Nick will come to us.

repeating too much

our little ones ae not going to "catch up" and it is the schools responsibility to teach them from where they are. Repeating K 2 times does not seem to be in a child's interest. He shoud stay with age peers and receive the services he needs to do well and make progress. That end of high school life skill and vocational ed is vital to his future.

Colin was really not ready to go to first grade this past year.....but off he went with his friends from KGTN take 2....... they really are helpful to him and work with him (a lot more than some of the teachers)......

He will likely never catch up or even be at the low end with his tyoical peers....... but they should be modifing to help him.....even if that means he is in resource or part time sped room (like Colin) for part of the day!

Our son William, was in K for three years and first for 2. He just completed second grade and will move up to third this fall. Biologically, he would be in going into sixth grade. To us, it is more important for him to learn to read and do simple math. While we realize that he will be in HS for just four years, we believe that the early years are easier to repeat and he is able to keep up with his classmates better. We also tutor him throughout the year and summer with his K teacher. He is 100% in the classroom, pulled out for speech. He will have trouble next year in third grade, but we still have one more year to hold him back. Eventually we will need to just push him onto the next grade.

He is the same size and relatively on the same level as his classmates.

He is very outgoing and the social aspect of new friends every year has not been a problem. He is well known throughout the school and has friends at all levels.

Kinder repeat

My daugter, Trista, will be repeating Kinder this school year. She had an aide with her last year and she will have the same aide again th
is year, along with the same teacher, this after much consideration.

We went into last year knowing she was not ready for Kinder but needed more than a preschool had to offer. Retention was very hard, as she made wonderful friends! But, they will still be there and she knows the children that will be entering Kinder this year, as her sister will be in Kinder also. They will be in different classes- to much drama from these two!

Trista has had ABA therapy, privately, in the past to prepare her for a classroom setting and it was worth every penny. She is now attending a new ABA - Austic School (she does not have autism) for private tutoring two hours a week and in a small class setting, with a one-on-one on Fridays. She would rather go here than her regular class!

We are looking forward to a wonderful second-year of Kinder. The school is looking into new ways in which to assess Trista as they tested her like every other child last year - which really made me angry! Keeping a smile on my face till the new year begins on August 5! TOO EARLY!!!

Talitha will be starting kindergarten next year. I know that she won't be 'ready' but she isn't learning anything else at preschool. Realistically most of our kids won't ever be 'ready' or academically capable of moving up to the next grade in the sense of the typical kid but that is why they qualify for extra help.

I am hoping to keep Talitha with her social group (basically age peers). Even if she repeats kinder she will still be in a K/1 composite class and still with her peers but I wouldn't repeat her again. I am really only sending her to school to make friends and develop social skills. I homeschool my other kids and am planning to take responsibility for her academic progress myself. What she learns in school will be a bonus. I want her to be able to read and write and do day to day maths - more importantly I want her to establish social skills and the ability to transition to new environments etc.

Only you know what is best for Nick.

I agree! I am an elementary school teacher ( not working!) and will be responsibe for Trista's education. School is a wonderful place for social interaction and she loves it and the children love her. This is her community and it is very important for her to be involved with all aspects of this wonderful area. She will not repeat any grade again.

I am wondering about this too - my dilemma is that I don't know enough about Year 1 to know if Hannah is ready (given that she will always be a bit different to her typical peers) or not!! She is doing great in Kindy - follows routine counting to 10 - sometimes higher, reading level is 1 or 2 - not unlike a lot of the other kids at the moment. So what are the key indicators that she might need and or benefit from repeating a year?
