You'll probably see the OT and PT. They will give you advice and show you how to help your child reach their goals. At this age they will help bring the hands to the midline, all you have to do is hang a toy above him and he should try to grasp it with both hands.

They might have a speech therapist come in to show you some activities to help improve oral control. I think we were doing some exercises with a little brush rubbing the inside of Mikey's mouth. But mostly at this age it will be playtime activities to improve gross and fine motor control.

I bet it will be fun...they'll love seeing him, and give you things to work on...I heard "tummy time", tracking objects (like moving a rattle around to see if his eyes follow) and reaching across midline alot during those times, as well as having her pull on things like the fringe on my scarf to build hand strength!

I love my EI team and get all weepy to think about not having them in my life in 6 months when she turns 3!!

ask a lot of questions, write it down.."why are you doing that?" "How is it helping?" "How will I know if..." "Do you have group time activities?"
My daughter is 5 months now, and I am just beginning to get specific with my questions i.e., "I want techniques that are for her oral motor skills"."Are there any parent classes on sign language?" "How old are will she be when the school district starts coming into the big picture, what do I need to do.."
I think that in general, people who work in early intervention really love their jobs and love working with our children. Hopefully you will have a great community of parents and OT/PT's to grow with. Just remember, no question is a "dumb" one, ask away!

If you get one that doesn't like to answer questions, like mine, ask for another. Wish I'd done that earlier! I thought she didn't have answers because there weren't any. But she didn't like to give answers because she disliked me.
