Right, due to being very delayed with his feeding and having oral aversions, Teddy is still largely bottle fed. He has special high nutriend/calorie formula, and a small amount of baby food, and he has his milk from a bottle, because he can't use a cup yet.
Up to now, I've been sterilising his bottles, even though we're not a germaphobic house at all (biting cats' tails, being licked by dog, sticking fingers in all sorts of stuff are a daily routine!) because I recall reading somewhere about the bacteria that can grow in any tiny residue of milk being very nasty.
Now my steriliser broke, and I don't really want to fork out the £££ for a new one if it's not needed... Do I need to keep sterilising his bottles at 2,5 years, given that he doesn't have any medical issues (just developemental ones?)

No I wouldn't, though I would pour boiled water in them and rice every other wash.

I wouldn't buy a sterilizer, in fact never had one. Just boil them few times a week and wash them with hot water. True about the bacteria. And if he uses plastic bottles, i would change them frequently.....

LOL the bottles get changed very frequently, the little so-and-so bites through the teats! I hope feeding takes off soon as there seems to be some improvement with his willingness to eat recently; I'm getting really tired of replacing his bottles every month!

Do you have a dishwasher? The temperature of a dishwasher is plenty sufficient to kill any bacteria. I'm all for not making more work for myself. Especially considering what kids put in their mouths constantly anyway. I wash their hands with soapy water and rinse well but don't sterilize them. Wink

I thought the guidelines were only to sterilize until they are 3 months old. At that point their immunity kicks in enough to fight anything off.

I was told to sterilise untill 12 months old but Grace is still having lots of bottles due to feeding issues and I do still sterilise her bottles once aday, but only because im in the habit. If my steriliser broke I wouldn't bother.

I still boil Ava's bottles (glass) in a pot on the stove, no dishwasher Sad . Hoping to get her onto a sippy cup in the next few months and will most likely stop then.

I used a steam steralizer with my daughter but used the Milton tables/ liquid in a large water bowl when Robert came along.
Found the Milton easier.
Only had to make it up in the morning and the wash each bottle in warm soapy water as I used it, and then leave it to steralize it in the Milton.

I only did that for the first year till I put Robert on regular cows milk.

I never have bought a sterilizer, and never will. A pot of boiling water for 2 mins does the trick, and, it's free!

Anyway, by 2.5, I don't sterilie any of the bottles. I just run them in the dishwasher. Between the amount of time they spend in blazing hot water, and the plate warmer when the cycles is finished, nothing can survive that.
