There was an interesting article in today's New York Times about exercise and autism. Basically the jist of the thing was that exercise is very beneficial and vigorous exercise seems to replace some of the need for self-stimming behavior. Moderate exercise did not seem to help to limit self stimming so much as vigorous exercise. The author speculated that perhaps the repetitive nature of arm movements in swimming , for instance, would perform the same calming effect that less socially acceptable stimming does. They discussed a number of sports, and said that sports like swimming, track, and other non-team type sports are particularly good because they don't require an ability to read other people's body language (like basketball would so you know when to pass the ball). It mentioned a couple of swimming and other adaptive sports programs, one in California, and the other where I live in Westchester County that seem to work well. Just thought it was kind of interesting and maybe you would too.

I would agree with this from an observation standpoint, watching Russell AND his sis who has ADD. Russell ONLY loves rough play and stims and I can see him being in certain sports as he gets older to "feed" this sensory and stim stuff he has a need for.
Also... my daughter who has ADD, certain sports are better for her to get her energy out and she too has a hard time with social ques and reading emotions, ect (she tends to act like she has Asperger's actually) and we try to pick things she CAN use her energy in such a way.
Both of my kids need certain types of activities like this article is saying. Makes sense to me!

If anyone wants a copy of the article, I can photocopy it and mail it to you. Just PM me your address. I regretably am incapable of finding and posting a link to the actual article due to my pitiful computer skills.
