Have heard the name, but have no clue what it is. Do you have any links or any information about it?

There's info on the website of the Down Syndrome Educational Trust, downsed.org . Click on "publications". Sorry I don't know how to poet the link!! I have a number of publications from DownsEd and they are really well written, easy to understand and fulll of useful information. The "Down Syndrome Issues and Information" series are excellent. Not full of jargon and easy to put into practise. I have been thinking of odering Numicon for Ben as it's recommended by DownsEd. They do a small pack for parents and child to use at home as well as larger packs for school use.

Numicon

I haven't posted here for years, so maybe should reintroduce myself. My son, Shawen, who has DS is 9 years old.

We did use Numicon. We used it more as another manipulative - along with abacus, touchmath, number line, etc. - rather than as a program to teach math.

As a manipulative, it was very helpful for addition and subtraction. I believe it's based on Catherine Stern's theory of learning number.

http://www.sternmath.com/

I think it gave a good visual - and since our kids are typically great visual learners, I think it's helpful to be able to visualize quantity and the relationships numbers have to each other.

We are now working on multiplication. I know there are ways to use Numicon for multiplication, but haven't looked into that. We're basically trying to memorize the tables - have used memory joggers a bit and have had some success - not quite as diligent as I should be with it.

I'm not to the math part yet with Jake but thought I would add this. I came across this at a conference for education for special needs. It's called math u see. http://www.mathusee.com It looks really interesting and once you buy the kit, it is good for all levels. Not to mention, the guy who developed it was already in the process when he and his wife had a child with DS. I hear it works for all kids.
