Kayla has her overnight EEG today and tomorrow, so yesterday I was trying to get everything done on my computer since I'll be gone. Got some lunch around noon came back to sit down and saw THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH.

No problem, I'll just pop the battery and restart in safe mode and shut down and restart again. That should work. NOPE. OK, so Ill restart it and select "use last known working configuration." NOPE. Let's try resetting the system back to November 1. NOPE. October 1. NOPE. September 1. NOPE.

Well, OK, the computer DOES manage to load Windows and then crashes while it's trying to load something. No problem, we'll go into System Configuration, turn off all the programs and services and turn them on 1 by 1. NOPE.

So, now it's 8 PM and we finally give up and call Dell. And they tell us how to wipe the drive and reload it with its original configuration. Thank goodness I had backed everything up a day or two before! But of course now I have to reinstall all my programs (I hope I can find them all!), reload all my data from my backup drive. And I'm not going to be here for two days and then Laurie has birthday parties all weekend. So I can't do anything until MONDAY. AND of course I have a major web project to do for a client due by next Friday.

It's always something. But DH did order me a new computer, because he doesn't trust this one anymore!!! (but he still bought another Dell, even though this one is only 1 1/2 years old!)

Just showed my DH your post. He is a severe computer nerd and said that he had a similar problem with a very important computer recently - one that couldn't be wiped. He could have fixed your problem. He says that the DELL people probably took the easiest course in telling you to wipe it and start again but it is possible to talk someone through fixing a problem like you had. Not sure how we would go for an international call but keep it in mind if you have something really severe happen and you just can't lose the data. He did say that you would have needed access to another computer to get some files.

Anyway, I hope it doesn't happen again and you can find all your software and reload it.

There has been a particularly nasty boot virus being spread, lately. If you're moving files from a backup, be sure and scan them thoroughly beforehand, or you'll re-infect your computer.

I had a Dell that did the same thing. Like you I was able to back it all up when it started to act funny. Good luck with it all.
