Yet another Thyroid question!

The last time Noah's thyroid was tested his TsH came back as being really low, but they said that was because he had been in starvation mode for so long that his body would need time to recover, that was in sept.

So, it's been a few months, he's gained his weight back and more, and is now back on the DS chart (around 25th percentile iirc).

I had his thyroid tested just over a week ago and the results came in, his TSH is 14.66. I know it's high, but what exactly does that mean? In other words, how does it actually affect him? Our doctors appt isn't until next week for it, or I'd be asking him lol.

The highest TSH level Melly ever had was over 20. We went to see the Endo. She was prepared to start Melly on medication, but wanted to check the levels a second time, just to see if it went down. It did. Now we just get her TSH levels monitored/tested every six months.

Melissa does have the anti bodies for , both, hypo and hyper thyroidism. ( I guess this is common) For now, it's just a waiting game to see when she will need thyroid meds.

I wouldn't be surprised if the ped wants to run another TSH level.
Our doctor gave a list of symptoms to look for in both hypo and hyper thyroidism. Ask for a list if you can.

Melissa's Endo won't treat her for hypothyroidism until her TSH levels stay over 10. It seems that many Endocrinologists have different ideas of when to treat, so don't be surprised if you get a lot of different responses. Smile

I pray all goes well at the next appointment.

Michelle

I am going to bump this up and see if you get any additional responses. Jacey just had blood work done and her TSH is high 9.something. I'm doing my research now to determine the best course of action (at least until I can get her in to see the Endo...)

Did you have T4 levels checked also? That was the next step for us.

Matthew had his TSH levels checked last week and they were just a tiny bit high - I can't remember the exact number, but something like 4.4. The next morning the nurse called with the results and said he needed to have labs redrawn asap with TSH and T4 levels. So 24 hours later his TSH had dropped to normal - 2.something and his T4 was within normal range. I don't know if this means the first sample wasn't accurate or if the levels can change within a 24 hour period, but my understanding is that if you have abnormal results you get it rechecked and also check T4 and then go from there.

We did have T4 done.... Jacey's was w/in the normal range.

I have been doing some reading today and it sounds like the new trend is to medicate at an even lower threshhold than before. I wonder why every Endo is different, and why some don't medicate until it's consistently over 10?

They called in a script for meds for her - she is to take 25mcg per day. I haven't picked up the script yet (was out of town over the weekend), and wanted to do some research first...

It means she has hypothyroid.

Grady's first reading was like 43 or something crazy like that (at his newborn screening). They checked it again a few weeks later and it went down, but was still not within normal range.

Grady's ped. endo. ups his dosage if his TSH goes above 5. He's only needed to increase dosage once in 6 years. They check Free T4 everytime they check TSH but I never pay attention that for some reason. I have no idea what he usually runs.

Medicated, his TSH is usually 1-2. Oh and he's on 50mcg daily.

Osiyyah has struggled with thyroid problems his whole life. We've been able to keep it under control with Zinc and Coconut Oil basically.

His TSH was high when he was younger, but his T4 and T3 levels were never out of range. When a TSH is just high it's not *true* hypothyroidism . . . it's technically called "subclinical hypothyroidism."

Some Endos will treat just a high TSH, but you have to be *very* careful, because it could make it worse off . . . it could turn it into hypERthyroidism if it is treated when it's not true hypOthyroidism.

Ideally, it's best if the TSH is 2.5 or under. I have a really good article on how it's best if a TSH is 2.5 or below. I can email it to anyone who would be interested (it's not in a link/format I could paste it, or otherwise I'd put it up here).
