Those homeschooling... are you paying for therapies yourself? Or, is there some other way to get therapy? Just wondering... Charlie will be Kindergarten next yer, so this is our year of figuring out what to do! Thanks!

Howdy! It's our 5th year homeschooling and we have always used the therapists that the public school provides.(OT, PT, ST) The therapists usually call me the first week of school and we figure out our schedule so I can do as many therapies back-to-back on the same day.
Most times I sit in and observe so I can back them up with activities we do at home, but as Katie has gotten older I will let her go by herself while I check out books in the school library.
I know that some people prefer to use private therapies, but we've always been very happy with the ones at the public school and we've had great relationships with them over the years. If we had an issue with any one of them not working well with Katie, then we would definitely seek out a private therpist.
Best of luck, Deane

Some public schools are open to cooperating with homeschoolers and some are not. It all depends on where you live. Call your local homeschool group and ask some questions about your public school. ( Just to test the waters. ) If your district is homeschool friendly, then you won't have a problem. If they are not, you may want to check out other avenues.
Melissa receives Katie Becket , which is a state supplementary insurance. It will pick up what ever our insurance won't pay. If I want insurance to pay for therapies, then I have to take Melissa somewhere that accepts medicaid. Many of the rehab centers have therapies for kids and accept Katie Becket. . So does our Children's Hospital. ( Hasbro) A friend of my takes her daughter to Hasbro for her therapies.
You can also check with your family insurance. Some of them will pay for OT and PT, but not speech. I don't know why that is.
I've actually chosen to take Melissa to the University of Rhode Island for her speech therapy. I pay, roughly, $25.00 for an hour session. I've been very happy with them so far.
You can also go to www.hslda.org for some information. ( Home School Legal Defense.) They prefer we NOT use the public school, but in the end, that's up to you. Again, it all depends on how the public school treats their homeschoolers.
Good luck to you.
Michelle

Deane,
I think it's wonderful that the therapists include you in the therapies and ask for your input. Sounds like a great group of people.

Michelle,
Yes, you're right. It's a real blessing to have a school district that is so friendly to homeschoolers. (The advantage of living in a small town.) We belong to HSLD too and I am very familiar with their recommendation to go through private therapists, but like you said, it's a different situation in each district and state. I see you're in New England; we live on the MA/NH border.
