Hi everyone. I just read about a new supplement for people with Down's Syndrome.

Quote:
New Downs, a Nutritional Supplement which addresses the special requirements of kids with Down Syndrome to enhance their mental and physical development and future well being. New Downs is a unique nutritional supplement developed by a Naturopathic Doctor and Mother of a child with Down Syndrome.

After checking out the website and reading feedback from a few parents who tried it with their kids, I'm really interested. Just wondering if anyone here has heard about it or, even better, used it!

This product is pretty new and the woman who formulated it is a naturopathic doctor not a medical doctor. Some naturopathic practices are considered suspect by medical doctors and scientists.

The list of ingredients is on the website. I would either thoroughly research the ingredients myself or have a medical doctor look them over carefully.

The usual load of pseudo-medical unproven claims, another formula like this pops up every six months promising the usual snake oil. Its in the same realm as Viagra or penis enlargement: i.e SPAM!

Our kids mostly thrive on old fashioned normal things like love, fresh air, exercise, and plenty of healthy fresh fruit, fish, vegetables and fiber. They also need friendship and to be included in the mainstream. Most of the rest is provided by duly qualified medical practioners. All these fancy pills are a waste of time, money and most importantly, your own integrity.

I have been hoping that one day, the two of us would cross paths on this forum. I have read so many of your posts that clearly intend to force your own opinions on parents who, like you, are simply trying to do what is best for the child that they love so much. I appreciate your passion for "our kids", but I don't appreciate the way that you abrasively belittle other parents for having different views than your own. I did not ask for an opinion about whether or not you or anyone else on this forum thinks I should give my son this "New Downs" supplement. If I had wanted an opinion about it, I would have specifically asked for one. I simply want information about it. I assure you that my son is loved and is given healthy foods along with exercise, but I believe that indeed there is a possibility that we can do more. I do not feel like my integrity is in jeopardy and I certainly do not feel it is your place to suggest that it is. I would appreciate if you would not respond to any of my posts ever again.

I found this a few months ago,but was concerned about the fact that it contains iron so I asked the same question on another forum. There was quite a discussion on it, but it was not strongly supported there. Besides the iron, there are a couple of other things that are not good for many people with DS.

Qadoshyah Fish blogged about it here:

She has some good arguments against using it. I'm always suspicious of the latest and greatest thing to help our kids.

Thank you ladies for your insight. I think there is just too little know about it to risk it. I appreciate your input!

We've been on it for about two/three weeks now. I would LOVE to give her Nutrivene D, but Olivia will NOT, WILL NOT take it. At least this one I get in her. So far I have noticed increased energy and better sleeping with her. Jury though is still out.

That's interesting Christine - it just goes to show that our kids are individuals & what is best for one is not neccesarily best for another. Have you checked her iron, copper, etc yet?

I don't always trust bloodwork. Noah's never came back anemic for any of his levels. However, he had all the symptoms of B12 deficientcy, and since he's been supplemented with B12, HUGE difference. The biggest improvement, is the fact that he doesn't get petachaie bruising from something as simple as wiping his bum or crying.

So...this is basically like an anti-oxidant packed multi-vitamin specifically for our kids because it targets our kids deficiencies and well known metabolic issues....

I would imagine, it would be good for anyone. There are always nay-sayers. I personally, am going to look into it for Noah, I'm just not a fan of the shipping cost.

The Brady Bunch:
Thanks so much for your information. You gave me something to think about. As far as the shipping costs, I've read on another site that you can contact the Dr. through her website for a more reasonable shipping rate to the US from Canada...I think she charges through PayPal.

I'm sure she'll take cash, the family silver, VISA, or your grannies jewellery, my dear Jen. They usually do. I have a slight head start on you, I have been following this debate now for 17 years. I studied and worked in public health management for three decades. And I have a lovely bright son with DS approaching adulthood who has never been back in hospital since he was two weeks old, who is a keen swimmer, skier and boxer, attends college, has a part time job, and travels independently.

I have been watching new parents parting with hard cash for "miracle cures" like this for far too many years now to feel nothing other than sadness that the USA in particular has so badly failed to regulate this persistent and tragic consumer fraud. In the meantime I shall pray for your belated conversion to common sense, common courtesy, and better evidence-based practice !

Our kids are not guinea pigs to experiment with, they are human beings who deserve our utmost respect and care. And that mainly includes plenty of exercise, hugs, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. Oh, and medical advice from qualified family practitioners and pediatricians, not mail-order unregulated pharma wholesalers who will vanish into the cyber-night like phantoms if there are any serious or lasting side effects.

Excalibur,

I think if we were having this discussion in person and could hear your voice and see your face it would be fine, but on here what you're saying comes off as very condescending. I doubt that Jen is looking for a "miracle cure" as you suggest. In fact, anyone who looks into these types of supplements is hoping to provide the very best for their child, to provide them with "the utmost respect and care."

I'm glad to hear your son is doing so well, but it probably has as much to do with luck as it does "plenty of exercise, hugs, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables." I get tired of people suggesting good health is as easy as that. I put those comments in the same category as those who say, "You just have to pray and have faith in God." If it were as easy as all that, my son would be the healthiest kid in town.

There's definitely a lot to learn after having a child with DS. To speak so disrespectfully to a parent who is not as far along as you are on the learning curve is not the least bit helpful. Jen seems like a smart mom who can do her own research and reach her own conclusions. I think she deserves more respect.
