My younger sister, who is 35, was just diagnosed with breast cancer. She has had a biopsy and MRI, and we are waiting on the appointment with the surgeon to find out if it has spread and what the treatment will be. We have a strong family history of breast cancer, but we are hopeful that it was caught early and has not spread yet.

I'm so sorry to read this. It must be such a difficult time for your whole family, I cannot even imagine. Praying with you and sending over hugs from across the ocean.

Marese
I'm saddened to read this! Its a bit of a roller coaster in the beginning but once she gets her treatment plan things seem to get better from then on in.
I think the plan gives some kind of certainty in a chaotic few weeks.
My twin sister Louise was diagnosed four years ago with breast cancer! It was a massive shock for her! Her plan consisted of chemo, surgery ( full mastectomy), radio therapy and depression as a result of all she went through!
Friday last I went with her to see a reconstruction surgeon...All going well she will reconstruct next May!
It's a long worrying time but your sister will get through it! Its good that she has you to help her.
What is your sisters name? My sister and I will pray for your sister, that she gets the strength needed for the plan and the recovery!

This horrible disease runs in our family too. All our thoughts and prayers are with you and your sister. I believe the treatment is good, if that's any consolation. Let us know how things go, and take care.

Linda, her name is Jeana, and incidentally, she is a Benedictine nun. She lives in another state, but has a good support system there.
Thanks for the thoughts and prayers, everyone.

So sorry to hear this. Do you know what type she has? I have Invasive ductal cancer that was caught before it reached my lymph nodes. I finished chemo in July and just had a bilateral mastectomy 2 weeks ago.

Leah, I know it's ductal, and it hasn't yet spread to her lymph nodes, but that's about all I know about the type. She has elected to have a lumpectomy followed by 6 wks of radiation 5 days a week.

Yes, that is the usual course of treatment. That's what I was supposed to have, until my oncotype came back showing my risk of recurrence being too high for me to be comfortable without being more aggressive with treatment. Many prayers for your sister!

UPDATE on my sister Jeana: After getting two different results on her biopsies (pre- and post-surgical), one said the cells were cancerous, and the other said they were precancerous. They sent the results to Mayo Clinic for analysis, and the results came back as precancerous, not cancer! This means that she will not need to take radiation after all, but instead just be monitored every 6 months or so. This was great news! Thanks for the prayers everyone--
