If you don't know what an RSS feed is, don't worry about it. If you do know and are interested in subscribing to the forum through an RSS reader, you are in luck. I have set up the forum so you can subscribe to either the global content or to individual forums. I tested it through bloglines and it works great. If anyone finds a problem with the feed in their reader, please let me know.

I know that some people have been using the RSS feed because I can see from Bloglines that there are a few subscribers. If anyone has subscribed let me know whether you have found it useful.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is formatted as an XML document (web sites are formatted as HTML documents). XML is not designed for people to read directly but rather for other computers to read.
So what is it good for? You can subscribe to this site using an RSS aggregator (that is, a program that can read many RSS files from many different sources) such as BlogLines. With BlogLines you can get a list of all the topics that have been changed since the last time you checked, and if you wish you can click on them to go directly to the forum. In principal, it is like the "View new posts" option on the main index page but it allows you to view this site on the same page where you can view changes to BBC news, the NY Times, your favorite comic strip, or your favorite blog.
As I said, if you aren't making use of RSS today then probably the RSS feed isn't much interest to you. If you are using an aggregator already, then this might be of interest. Probably sooner or later everyone will be using an RSS Aggregator.
Here is what this site looks like in my BlogLines. The RSS feeds that I have subscribed to run down the left hand side. You may recognize a couple of them.

I've been using it - it's a little unwieldy to see that there are 101 new posts, but it's easy to scan them . . .and they're out of context; if you're not familiar with the subject matter it can be kinda odd - so color me "undecided" at this point. It's also nice to have the link on bloglines to jump there, too.

I am sort of undecided too. I originally had it set so that it would always show the first post in the thread but that wasn't very helpful because I wasn't sure if I had read the most recent post or not. I think I sort of like it but it isn't indespensable.
