I was 35 when Ollie was conceived, 36 when he was born. Our Obs told us that if the DS could be attributed to anything, it would have been my age (at the time statistically I fell into a higher 'risk category' at 35)...........very interesting that in a few short yesr these figures have changed..........

I was 35 at conception, turned 36 a few weeks before he was born. My son was conceived from baby dance on day 8 of my cycle and those little spermies likely had to live a week before being fertilized (yes it was the only day that month). I know that the age of fathers doesn't seem to be an influence so much as sperm are made every couple of months but i wonder about sperm that was at the end of its lifespan (can live outside man's body in ideal conditions one week only).

I don't have the expertise or money to do the research but i'm very curious. They don't test to see if it is the egg or sperm that donated the extra chromosome. The geneticist did tell us the average age is 28 and this factors the high pregnancy rates of under 35's and the increased risk of the over 35's.

Age alone can't be the only factor for sure but that's all most people think.

Im new to the group and I definitely am the grandma of the group. I actually haved 2 grandkids one 19 months and one newborn. I have a 24 year old son, a 15 year old son, a 12 year old daughter, a four year old daughter, and turner my 3 month old ds son. The last two are from my second marriage. I wasn't planning to have any more kids but he didn't have any so I decided to have the four year old. Turner, the three month old was a surprise but he is definitely a sweetheart and we are all crazy in love with him. The may not be alot of us oldies in the group because we as a whole are a bit slower at learning the computer. Actually I hope Im doing this post right.

42 - Our 20 year old son had told us he was getting married just a couple of months before I found out! I was thinking then I could be a grandma soon! By the way, still no grandbabies.

27, just proves that statistics are not always right, so many of us are well below the "average" bracket.

Mike was born 3/11/2000. I was 31. He was diagnosed with Downs at birth.

We were fortunate that Mike has no medical problems and has had no surgeries. Last year, we found out that he has the Atlanto-Axial Instability with his neck - but that's all. He is very very active.

I was 28 when Imke was conceived and was 29 when she was born. I do believe that the quality of the egg is maybe not as good later in life but surely our age is not always the factor?

30 at conception, 31 at birth. Our geneticist told us it was something that 'just happened." Isn't it amazing how broad the spectrum of our ages is? I had heard, just as most of you did I'm sure, that mothers 35 and over are 'at risk' for having a baby with Down syndrome. You know what never, ever crossed my mind though? I never considered the 'risk' for moms under 35. I just heard over 35 and crossed it off of my list of things that I didn't have to worry about!

Jacob was born 9 weeks early, the day after my 39th birthday. We didn't go for diagnostic testing, just a standard nuchal fold scan at 12 weeks gestation - my risk went down so low for that pregnancy that our consultant said we would not be offered any further testing. We wouldn't have gone for it anyway, but I guess we have learned that a risk factor is a 'risk' - anyone can be that 1 in 500 etc...
I am personally glad that we didn't know prenatally. We had Jacob's diagnosis when he was 9 weeks old. A bit of me still thinks of that time as pre-Downs and post-Downs and wonders what happened to the 9 week old I thought I knew, but I am still glad that I had my baby and knew Jacob first so that I had someone to relate to. I can't imagine the pain some people might go through if they feel they have to make decisions before they know their baby - hope all that makes sense!
