This may sound silly. We have alway used a stroller at times for Jackson, even now at 6. Sometimes he needs to be "contained" say if we are at the mall or sometimes my husband and I like to take a walk for exercise and he likes to ride along in his stroller and watch the world go by. Is it wierd that we still use a stroller for him? Does anyone else with an older child still use one? Anyway, he has outgrown both the umbrella stroller and the bigger one we had. Today we had a meeting with his waiver case manager and his PT. We probably can get one through his waiver funds. They found several strollers that would fit him, made for kids that weigh even more than him. We can choose between one that looks like an umbrella one or one that is like a jogging stroller. If anyone has something like this, what would you recommend?

I know we've talked about strollers fairly recently but I can't find the thread.

I did find one from Leah about her daughter Angela's new stroller http://www.downsyn.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=8183

Thanks Namoi - I looked at the post you referenced and the one that Angela has looks similar to one of the ones we're looking at. Leah, if you read this, are you still happy with that style? Cause, oh my god, they are so expensive! and I want to make sure we and Jack will like it.

I LOVE MY STROLLER! And it was covered by MA, because it's considered a wheelchair. Not only do we use it because of Angela's stamina issues, but it's also a wonderful containment device when we're somewhere like Home Depot. LOL Actually, she insists on riding when we're at home depot becuase she doesn't like the noises and stuff there, but in the stroller she's fine. I think she just feels more secure and is able to look around at all the things she wants to see without getting knocked over.

Oh, and they come in 3 different sizes. Angela's is the smallest, and it goes up to 100 lbs. We ordered ours through a medical supply company, and they measured her to find the right fit. Then the foot rests are adjustable, etc.

Okay my child with DS is a baby, BUT I have 4 other children some of which have special needs too... so I hope it is okay to post here. I am with Leah. We have a "wheelchair" called a hi-lo stroller. It goes to 100lbs and is the smallest one they make also. The most WONDERFUL thing about the chair is that it can adjust!!!! IT can ride down near the floor (at eye level with other small kids) Or the seat can raise clear up at shopping cart level. The adjustment is WONDERFUL (did I mention) and is REALLY easy to use, and fold up in the car. It can adjust to ANY table height (which is GREAT eating out!!!) and we LOVE it. It was also gotten through a medical supply company... ordered by a RX from the doctor and our PT. The other great thing about it is that it is WIDELY excepted in stores and restaurants because it is a "wheelchair" and you can take it places you can't take a "stroller". Good luck and let us know what you pick... I am very intrested in knowing what else is out there as we have several kids that we are looking for something for. Megan

OH YES we use a stroller still!!! Russell is 8. Actually... for us.. I knew I needed a new stroller that could handle more poundage... Russell is 42 lbs now.. around 39 or so when we got our most recent one. I looked into the more spec needs or adaptive ones and then looked at some joggers and decided for this one, to go with a jogger. I am sure our next one will have to be the adaptive kind. But Russell loves to use his feet on the wheels so we felt the jogger would work better. It only had that one front wheel and it's kinda covered so he can't put his feet on it and try to hinder things.

Sometimes some of us still need a stroller and that is ok! It just is how things are!!!

Good luck!!!!

A.

Briar is almost 5 and I still use a stroller. He gets tired very easily and becomes upset. We use a stroller even at the grocery store. Briar is now needing a bigger one. We have a jeep jogging stroller. It will probally work for another 6 months or so. Please let me know what kind of strollers that you are using.

I plan on using one for a long time.

Hannah has one too and she is seven. There are times when it is just so helpful ,like at amusement parks when she can't walk the whole way without tiring. We have the Convaid EZ rider. We LOVE it. Can't live without it. It is adjustable and will fit up to 75 lbs I think. If you can't get it approved through his waiver you may want to check ebay. A lot of times I see them there at a fraction of the original cost.

Jennifer, that's a cool one! I like all the pockets and stuff on it. Nobody ever showed me that one before. Sad I'd want the "4" though, and it's not available until July. LOL

Thanks for everyone's input! We narrowed it down to the Axiom jogging stroller - I thought it was cool, and the Maclaren Major Positioning Push Chair. That one looks like a big umbrella stroller. I think that's the one we'll get, my husband asked the weight of each, Axiom is 37 lbs and Maclaren is 16 lbs and he decided he'd like the lighter weight one for getting it in and out of the van. It is supposed to hold up to 110lbs. So far the website with the best price on it is:

[blue]http://www.devinemedical.us/4572.html[/blue]

Jack's PT said that she had some other families that had gotten this one and they really liked it. We would get it with the shopping bag, padded seat and sunshade.

We still use a stroller with Mikey. We have the Maclaren Special Needs Stroller and we love it. It's light but solidly built. It holds up to 120 lbs so it is going to last awhile. Here is a better picture:

The first picture in this thread is Mikey sitting in his stroller:

We were torn between the one Tom got (the McClaren) and the Convaid. Then the person from the supply company told me the foot rest on the McClaren isn't adjustable (or somethign about the foot rest. Does it interfere with folding or something?) so we decided on the Convaid instead. I think it's heavier than the McClaren, but it's still easily manageable, folds easy, etc. Also, on one of the product reviews there was a comment than the McClaren gets too top heavy if you hang anything on the handles, lika bag, etc. Don't know if it's true or not, it was just a user review. Since we got ours, I've seen others that I would have considered, but didn't know they existed.

Noah STILL gets in the stroller when we all go to the mall, otherwise, he'd be GONE. We got our stroller at Burlington Coat Factory and I love it. It's a double stroller, and Halle sits in the front and Noah sits in the back. I don't know what it is about this stroller that makes it different than the other's that we've had, but there is SO much room in the back that he could be in there for another 2 years. He has so much leg room and can recline and sleep and sit, or put the food tray on and have a snack, it's just great. It's a Safety 1st Stroller by Dorel Juvenile Group.

This is most definitley true. A light bag is no problem but a pocketbook or something like that can make it too heavy. When Mikey is in it (he's almost 60lbs) it's usually not a problem but if he is walking and the stroller is empty it can be top heavy. That is why it is worth getting the optional shopping attachment that goes under the seat.

The foot rest has to be removed when the stroller is folded up. It snaps on and off easily enough but if you are going to carry it around then it is an extra thing to carry. It is adjustable... there are three of four height settings.

I can hang all sorts of crap on the back of my Convaid! LOL Insurance wouldn't pay for any "extas", but I might go back and get the basket thingy for underneath. The foot rests on the Convaid fold back and to the side, just like on a wheelchair. Shees, we could just direct people here for product reviews! LOL

The hi-lo stroller is great too... it is bulky and a bit heavy though.... But I love that it can adjust to any table height.. that was really a God send for us when we were traveling and eating out etc... the other cool thing is that it came with a backpack that is attached to the back of the seat and it also came with a sun shade. Megan

We WISH that we could find a double stroller that went up to 100lbs!!!! I am going to look at the one that Vonda mentioned.
