I thought I would re-introduce myself. I'm Melissa and I checked in about a month ago before my daughter was born. She made a safe arrival on June 22nd. She weighed 6 lbs 9 oz, and was able to come home with me when I was released. She nursed really well in the hospital, but since we've been home we are having some difficulties - I don't think she's getting enough milk, despite my use of a nipple shield and feeding her every two hours. I'm pumping now too, and feeding her a few bottles to ensure that she's getting milk and she seems to do better with that. I'd really like her to continue to get breastmilk, so if anyone has any tips for me, it would be much appreciated.
She was also diagnosed with an AV Canal before she was born, and we were told she would need surgery around 5 months of age. We had a cardiologist appointment (with her actual cardio, not the one we saw when I was pregnant) and he said it was a tranitional AV Canal - and he didn't anticipate that she would need surgery until around 2 years of age. We were a little surprised because it was so different from what everyone had told us, but we are happy that she has a chance to get a bit stronger. They will monitor her heart and if anything happens before then, they will first try meds and then surgery. Does anyone have experience with surger later in years like 2 or so?
She also has her First Steps Evaluation to see if she needs additional therapies at this time. If not, they said they would check back in 3 months to evaluate her again.
So that's where we are, sorry for the book - I'm full of questions. We adore her, she's so awesome and we are so proud of her strength already! I look forward to participating here more.

What a cutie. My son Cameron (5months) was diagnosed several weeks after birth with AV canal defect. We are currently waiting for the hospital to call us with a date for the surgery. Our cardiologist said we needed to do it soon. He was put on Lasix around 1 month of age. Congratulations on your new baby.

Hello! Delphine is gorgeous! I breastfed Hannah. At first she had difficulty latching on and I used the nipple shield. One of the lactation nurses told me to stop using it because it was requiring Hannah to suck harder to get any milk. Have you tried not using the shield? Hope everything works out!

Congratulations Melissa! Delphine is just beautiful and I love her name! I'm Jen mom to Brock who is 11 months - where does the time go?!?
We struggled with the breast feeding - Brock was in NICU for about two weeks so came home with bottled breast milk and breast feeding. I don't have any suggestions for you except to contact your hospital's lactation nurses - they can give some good advice. We also have not been through heart surgery - so no advice their. I'm sure some other families will post.
Take care.

Thank you for the welcome everyone! We've made a little more progress in the past two days with the nursing, so I'm glad. Hannah, she won't nurse without the shield. She started out without it, but then wouldn't nurse/latch so the lactation consultant suggested the shield. It seems she does well with the "football hold" and a relative of ours in France also suggested holding her vertical (she has worked with some down syndrome children). That works better too - although it is a little awkward.
huskies - I wish you luck with Brooke and hope that she doesn't need surgery. Does she also have an AV Canal? I hope you receive good news!
KStrickland10 - I'll be thinking good thoughts for Camerons surgery!
