I am new to this forum, but not to the website. I have a 5 month old with Down Syndrome and found this website extremly knowledgeable and useful in my first days of trying to cope with the surprise. Because of the things I have read here, I started looking at my situation more optimistically. [blue][/blue]

My little guy, Cameron is 5 months. I will post a pic if I can figure it out. If anyone can tell me how, that would be great. Cameron is getting ready to have heart surgery. He has an AV defect. There is no surgeon in our area, so we will be traveling a little ways to UVA. My doc reassure me that this is fairly common, but all the same I am scared and nervous. WE don't have a specific date yet.

Welcome to downsyn!!!! My daughter Talitha is now 7 months old and had open heart surgery for AV canal defect when she was 4 1/2 months old. Lots of kids here have had that type of surgery and yes, it is common. It is normal to be scared and nervous with your child going in for surgery. Let us know when you get a date so we can pray. If you want any info or to see pics from hospital just let us know as I found hearing others experiences and pics helpful.

Welcome. I lived in Hampton for 14 years. I loved it and wish I was still there. I still try to get back at least once a year to visit. I am sure you will love the site - there is alot of information, but also alot of support. I can't wait to hear more about you and your family. We may know some of the same people there. I sent you a private message.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Everyone here is so nice and positive. That is something you don't always get, especially in the medical world.

Welcome. Your little boy is a doll, so bright eyed! My son, Wil, had his surgery at 5 months. It was scary and hard but so worth it to see him thriving. As an aside, I have a friend whose son just had his second of three open heart surgeries at UVA this week. They have been very pleased with the care their son is receiving there.

Our older son is Alek, he is 7. He wasn't so fond of Cameron at first, but has now taken over as big brother. He is very protective and keeps a watchful eye over him. He knows Cameron has DS but doesn't really understand all these appts. and therapy and such. I sometimes feel guilty because Cameron requires so much more care than Alek, I feel I am neglecting him. I try to take special time for just the two of us together, but it's hard enough to just find time for yourself.

Welcome to Down syn, I'm Jen mom to Brock who is 11 months. We live in Des Moines, IA. Brock is our first and his diagnosis of Ds was also a huge surprise. Quite honestly - Down syn was also my saving grace in the beginning, and still is.
Alek and Cameron are such cuties. I'm glad that Alex has taken over as big brother! We are excited for Brock to have siblings some day.
I truly think all people with Ds have so many opportunities today, and that their ability to live independent lives will only continue to improve in the years ahead.
Take care and post often!
