I don't have any experience with either selective mutism or autism. But I did a quick search and came up with this in an FAQ about selective autism

Quote:
Is There a Relationship Between Selective Mutism and Autism?
No. Selective Mutism is sometimes erroneously mistaken for Autism. The striking difference between the two is that Autistic individuals have limited language ability, while individuals experiencing Selective Mutism are capable of speaking and normally do so in comfortable situations.

This is from http://www.selectivemutismfoundation.org/about.shtml

For that it sounds like they possibly are mutually exclusive.

Good luck to your friends.

Edited to add: Just found this link with a follow up to the above http://www.donnawilliams.net/selectivemutism.0.html?&L=0
