Hi! I am Rachael and live near Lake Tahoe in California. My husband and I have two children, six year old daughter, Courtney and Luke, who is now 15 months. Our son has DS and had a duodenal atresia repair when he was five days old at Stanford Children's hospital. We did not know he had DS before he was born. I declined the AFP screening with both of my children. I was not offered any other tests as I was 31 yrs at the time. They suspected he had DS at birth, but he wasn't karotyped until he was a week or two old. The attending physicians at the NICU at Stanford were awesome with their approach. I was scared and didn't know what to expect, but their message was "a piece of cake". Our son is doing well. He already had tubes placed in his ears when he was 10 months old because of fluid. He may have to have a PDA repair but it is so small they are just monitoring for now. Luke has been in EI since he was 8 weeks with an infant specialist, OT, PT and ST. I am hoping my pictures post. This is the first on-line group I have ever joined. Normally, I'm pretty private but this site is such a rich source of information and support I decided to join.

i have a boy, who's 18 months old. so elias and luke are close age.

Rachael, Welcome to Downsyn! It's an great place with wonderful people.
It sounds like Luke is doing great. You are the first person I have heard say something positive about their physicians when receiving the dx of Down syndrome. It's fantastic that you had compassionate, understanding and knowledgeable doctors! Looking forward to seeing pics and hearing more from you.

Welcome! I have a 3 year old granddaughter, Olivia, who has Down syndrome. My son and his wife didn't know Olivia had DS until after she was born. Their experience was also very positive, as the doctor who delivered her has a nephew with DS. He was very upbeat and told us how great his nephew was doing. I think it was such a blessing that this doctor happened to be the one to do the delivery, because he wasn't the only doctor in the practice.

Hello and Welcome. I also have never joined any type of forum like this one....but I am sure glad I found it!! There is so much info and so many awesome moms (and dads!!) who are so willing to help.

My Daniel is the same age...born 6-7-05. He had his open heart surgery to repair his av canal defect when he was 8 weeks old...and ever since then....been healthy. He actually has his first cold now!!

Looking forward to hearing more about Luke. We have quite a few moms with babies our son's age!!
