I didn't think it would take me so long to get to part 2. I have spent a lot of time on this site, but I am usually nursing and unable to type very efficiently. I have enjoyed reading all of your posts and getting to know everyone here and learn of their unique stories.
Back to Kasen's story, I think that even more upsetting to me was finding that Kasen has a Dandy Walker Cyst in his brain. He has an enlarged cisterna magna, which is an open area of the brain that we all have. I made the mistake of going online to check into it further only to find out very disturbing news. I came across a site where the family of a 6 year old girl was celebrating that she had just mastered sitting unassisted! I was not prepared for what I learned as I read further. But like DS, there is a wide range of how the DW affects people.
I was devastated, worrying if my son would ever do ANYTHING. I spent many a nights in tears thinking the DS coupled with the DW would equal a pretty grim outcome for our little Kasen. I basically turned it over to God and prayed that I would be loving and accepting of whatever abilities my dear son would have.
I must admit I was not looking forward to his arrival like I did with my other children, and that made me feel horribly guilty. To make it through my pregnancy I had to disconnect from Kasen in case he didn't make it, which I was told was a possibility.
Well all that worry was for nothing cause it was immediate big time LOVE at first sight when Kasen was born. My first words were, "HE'S BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!" I was so afraid I would look at him differently and that I wouldn't love him the same as my other kids; boy was I wrong! During my pregnancy the human side of me couldn't help but view him as having DS, the label society places on our dear children. I needed to hold him in my arms and see what a NORMAL baby he truly is!
I am loving my son so much and am grateful that I was chosen to be his mommy! We have been lucky to not have to endure heart surgery and have had all good reports so far on his tone, etc.
The DW issue is an unknown at this point. They need to sedate him to do a CT scan, and I am not willing to put him through that right now. The ped agreed to monitor him and watch his head size, etc., and it may be a non-issue for him and just be a variant of normal, which is what we are praying for.
Kasen is doing well with feeding and is a whopping 11 lbs at 7 weeks!!!! I was expecting a tiny baby, boy was I wrong!
I am so glad to be here and will be posting more soon, for now I am lurking here learning as much as I can from all of you. Thanks for the warm welcomes!
