I hope that I can get this to work this time. I've been trying to introduce myself for a very long time.
I have two children. My daughter Katelyn, who is eight months old, has down syndrome. I'm so in love with her. Always wanting to get new information, I am thrilled to have found this place.
I'm a bit nervous. Not only am I new to the land Katelyn brought me to, I'm also new to the computer world. Someone please help me out.

Thank you for responding!!! You have a beautiful daughter. Has your daughter ever had a swallow test done? Katelyn will have one done at the end of October. She isn't able to eat cereal with out gagging. Even doing our oral motor stimulation she gags on her own saliva!!! She is thankfully able to nurse great but our O.T. believes she could be silently aspirating. She has never been able to successfully suck from a bottle. Do you know anything about this?

I'm sorry, we've never had to have the swallow test done, but I know there are others here on the boards who have. If you go to the menu at the top of the page under "Search", you can enter "swallow test," and I'm sure you'll get some posts. They will probably have any answers to any questions you have, but if not, just post a question under the question forum, and no doubt you'll get all the answers you need! Good luck!
And thanks for the sweet comments on Em. We think she's pretty cute, too. Can't wait to see pictures of your baby!

Welcome to DownSyn, you have found a wonderful resource for learning new things about your daughter. My boys had a swallow test done last month, it was quite interesting to watch. Both boys are aspirating liquids, one more than the other. Caleb is my boy who gags alot and has more difficulty eating certain foods, he also was aspirating more severly than Isaac was. Caleb was VERY gaggy around 8 months, he seems to be getting better every day, although somedays are still nasty. Hopefully our kids will just adapt to different textures and grow out of the gagging.
Glad you found our board and hope to hear more from you.

Welcome. I am so excited to see someone from Newport News. I lived there and in Hampton for 14 years. I loved it there and would still be there except my family is in Louisiana. I am looking forward to learning more about you and your family.

That's odd. I am from down south as well. Mississippi and Texas. To be exact Vicksburg Ms. and Irving Texas. My brother is in Louisiana now but I'm not sure where. You have lovely children. I am unable to do pictures but would be so proud to show off my two kids. I look forward to getting to know you as well. We have alot og common ground.

Hi!! Welcome to downsyn. I love the name Katelyn. My second daughter, Stefanie has Kaytlyn as her middle name. My little one, Talitha, had a lot of difficulty swallowing and gagged on everything including her saliva until after her heart surgery at around 5 months. I think it was being on a respirator for 9 days and having various things shoved down her throat that stopped the hyperactive gag but she is still not good at swallowing. She was fed by nasogastric tube until a couple of weeks ago and then she got a g-tube which has been wonderful so far. She can eat small amounts and drink small amounts (from a cup) but nowhere near enough to keep her alive. We are also concerned she could be silently aspirating. I am hoping to get a swallow study approved soon.
I am glad Katelyn nurses ok. Hopefully by the time you wean her she will be able to drink from a cup. Talitha has never been able to drink from a bottle but did nurse for a little while until she became too sick to keep it going.
Hope you can get the hang of this computer stuff quickly and keep in touch. You are doing well so far

Wow!! Tigger!!! That is alot to deal with. And I thought It to be difficult. I named Katelyn that because Of my name, Katie. I was always asked if my real name was Katelyn. No. But it always sounded great. My sons name is Taylor. Your daughter is so georgeous. She looks like Katelyn with the praying hands. I had a friend of mine look at her. She's really pretty. I hope to continue to stay in touch with you.Good day!!!

Welcome Katie and Katelyn! I'm Jen mom to Brock who is 14 months. If you want more information on a subject - such as the swallow study - just go to search (see above in the options area) and then click on search and type in swallow study. You'll be amazed by how many posts there are on any given subject.

Hey Katie-
Good to see you found this place. I found it shortly after Cameron was born, and have been coming here every day since. There are many wonderful people and kids here too. It's like a big extended family and support network.

Corgan had a swallow study done when she was about 18 months old. She gets a lot of lung infections and her breathing always sounds kind of rumbly. It's not too scary of a test, the worst part is that they are not allowed to eat anything for a period of time beforehand, and then they poop icky white stuff for a couple of days after wards. Corgan's actually came back normal, they say she is not aspirating, so no one seems to know why her lungs are always so rumbly, but anyway, good luck and don't be nervous!
