I have this HUGE MESS of a desk. I mean HUGE! It is two large desks with the chair in between them.
When school started I said I was going to get the house cleaned up. But then the puppies arrived, and now we're pushing mid October for goodness sakes, and the puppies are here for another 4 weeks at the least.
When you walk in our front door, the first thing you see is my desk. It's horrible. I don't even know where to start, though I did start it last week. Surely there is nothing here that I need that badly, since I haven't been able to see any of the papers in the stacks for months. Surely I could just throw it all away....except that surely there is money in there somewhere. There just has to be.
And so, I must clean my desk. I think I'll take everything off the surfaces, put it in a box, and start sorting. At least the surfaces would be clean and I can just dig in the boxes to find something...until I can find the time to sit down and sort through it all.
And when the desks are completed, there is the laundry. 99% of it is clean...it's just not folded, much less put away. What in the world....there are only THREE of us living here! I know, at one time, I had 5 children living in my house and I didn't have a lick of help. Why is it so difficult now? (no need to answer, as really in my head I know the answer, I'm just ignoring it.)
And after the desks are clean, and the laundry is washed, dried, AND PUT AWAY, then AND ONLY THEN, will I allow myself to start the new project I want to do, which is stripping my kitchen wallpaper and repainting.
I know the prize is my clean house and not caring when people drop in. But I want a better prize than that. I want something big like a diamond ring, or a trip to Tahiti...or a motorcycle.
I'll keep you updated on my mess.

Leah,
When you're finished at YOUR house, can you come to mine, and help me go through all of the stuff I took off of MY table, and dumped into boxes until I have time to go through it?!?! (I am NOT kidding....sadly....)
Oh, and I already have the wallpaper stripped in the kitchen....maybe someday we'll actually get our kitchen cabinets re-hung, and I'll get to paint and/or put new wallpaper up!! But first we'd have to get actual flooring on the floor, and not just the sub-floor we've been treading on for um, what, 2 years now?!?
Don't feel bad...Know you're in good company....Hang in there, do what you can, don't beat yourself up for what you can't....Especially with the puppies, they are WAY more time consuming than John Q. Public ever imagines. And I always say, "If you're my friend, you don't care what my house looks like. And If you DO care what my house looks like, I guess you're not really my friend."
Hugs to you.

Leah,
I'll give you a diamond ring, a trip to Tahiti AND a motorcycle . . . after I dig out from under this mess on my desk and find my checkbook. Or is it under the pile on the counter? Hmmmmm . . .

Leah, I'm too broke to offer much. After looking over our bills, my hubby told me he was picking up 3 extra shifts this week. AND we did not receive the rent from our rental house this month. Even worse the tenent is my hubby's dad, so I can't exactly evict now can I (I'd really like to though, be nice Shea be nice)? I do however, have my life savings sitting on my dresser in a jar. It's probably got about $5-10 in change and good friend that I am I'll be happy to half it with you! If you're really nice I'll throw in a preteen who tried to walk out of the house wearing a tee-shirt that says "I googled your boyfriend, I'm feeling lucky". Don't even ask where she got it from.

ROFL
If I didn't have Dean coming home, yet again, hoping to be able to see the desk, I would say...well I won't say it...but I would just ignore the mess a bit longer. LOL
The other day I had started "piles" There was Dean's pile (and I don't know why, cuz he never ends up going through his pile!) and then my pileS which are bank stuff, bills, Angela's school stuff, dog stuff (which has to be divided into several separte piles later on) cued speech stuff....the list goes on.
But apparently Angela didn't like the piles disrupting her line of vision on the living room, because that night while I was making dinner she piled everything back on my desk!

I just have a few suggestions...
1. If you have a baby I recommend co-sleeping. It frees up the cot to store all the unfolded washing after it's dry.
2. If you have older children, teach them against materialism. Teach them that it is people and all that bla bla that is important. Keeps their rooms nice and tidy since you can throw away all their stuff.
3. Plastic dishes and cutlery CAN be washed in the clothes washer with the clothes. Consider this multi-tasking.
4. Have the dog help you clean out the refrigerator. Saves money on dog food as well.
5. This one is for you, Leah... Invest in a roll top desk.
6. Take the kids swimming every day. Saves time at bed time since hey, they MUST be clean with all that water on them no?
7. For all those things you just aren't sure where to put them. Invest in an extra chest of drawers to keep in an out of the way place. When you just don't have time to sort things, put them in one of the drawers. When you have two to three rooms filled with 'extra' chests of drawers, time to finally do all that sorting.
Which leads to the following...
8. During the winter months burn anything you haven't found a place for... saves on firewood and cuts down on the heating bill.
Depending upon how much you have to burn, perhaps consider obtaining a burning permit...
9. Christmas is a time of giving. Why shop for more stuff when you can just wrap and post off all the clutter you've been keeping round? Grandparents love homemade gifts from children. Another way to get rid of all those school and craft projects! Bonus! Besides teaching the evils of materialism you are now teaching about giving.
10. I don't care what anyone tells you, old, worn knickers do NOT make excellent dusting cloths.

I had a friend over today and she asked me if I had a printer. My desk is piled up so deep the printer is totally buried. LOL Whenever the phone rings I have to lift stuff off it to answer. And I have a pile of washing taller than me in the bathroom and it is just from the last few days. I guess it comes from having 8 people here and a washing machine that is designed for barbie clothes. My pet hate is putting washing away and that is reflected in the collection in my bedroom. It is even folded but I just can't seem to make myself take that last step of traipsing through the toy jungle and wrestling with the kids drawers to put everything away. We don't have puppies but I have been hand raising a pig for the last two weeks and she needed two hourly feeds!! It is also school holidays here and I have four kids of my own, a recovering 22 year old drug addict with mother issues, her son and various other children who just seem to appear in my lounge room.
Of course, that doesn't explain why I can't (and haven't for a long time) see the top of the desk. I think I will design a desk that doesn't have a level surface. Having the desk surface at an angle is only way I would be able to keep it tidy! I have no idea where I would put all this stuff though.

I soooo need a desk at an angle!!! What a great idea! And then at one end there could be a big garbage pale so instead of sorting through all the junk on your desk you just tie up the garbage bag and take it out to the trash. Fabulous idea!
