Max is almost 6 months now and is not sitting with any support. The moment we let go, he's falling over. His back seems to be slouchy, and I've been working on exercises to build his muscles. How old would you say was your child when they began to sit without much support? Did the bumbo chair really help, or is it more of a convenience thing?

elias started sitting without support at 8 months, then he beggin with reflux and stoped sitting, and do it again until 11 months ofr short moments, then i could say he was 15 months when he could sit without fall out, and at 17 could do from flor-to-sit

Charlie was about 7 months when he started sitting propped up on his hands, then about 8 months when he really started sitting unsupported. Now at 9 months he can sit for 10 minutes or more without falling over. I don't know if this helped, or if it was just coincidence, but he started sitting more soon after we bought him an exersaucer. I do think playing in the exersaucer helped him develop his trunk muscles and balance. We don't have a Bumbo.

I remember taking photos of Matt at his first Christmas sitting up supporting himself with his hands in front of him, so he was just over 6mths. He was 7 1/2 when he sat up properly.
And yes, I really do think the Bumbo helped!!!

This morning I happened to glance in one of the baby rooms at daycare. They had 2 brand new Bumbo seats with babies in there. They love the one I bought for Carson. He used it and all of the other babies in there used it. I think it helped and obviously they do too. I had several parents from Carson's class tell me they bought one to use at home.

Polly is no where near sitting and she is six months. She is now able to hold her head up off the ground during tummy time. We are pretty excited about that? Polly seems to have very low muscle tone in her trunk, but we are trying different tricks to help her. It sounds to me like Max is doing well!

mayson is sitting for a minute at a time by herself but she will be 8 months on sunday. she was almost a month early so the PT says to consider her a 7month old when i comes to milestones. Mayson has low tone in her upper back. i think the bumbp has help her but i did it little by little. minutes at at time. i also put her play gym in front of it while she sat in it so it kept her up and using the muscles she needs to work on. i love ours!

Austin sat at 7 months. I started him in an exersaucer, a jumpster and I would also prop him up in the corner of his play pen (pack n play) Also I would anchor him in a boppy. Looks like a horse shoe, you can get one at Target.

Talitha has been sitting unsupported for a couple of months so I guess it was around the 8 1/2 month mark that she could sit reasonably well. We started her in the bumbo at around 5 months putting her in for short periods a few times a day and she gradually built up strength. I reckon it was the bumbo seat that helped her build up her trunk muscles.

Alex could kind of sit by himself by his first Thanksgiving...guess that would be 8 months. By Christmas, he had it mastered. We used the Bumbo, and it was fantastic for building his neck strength. His music therapist started using this support cushion with him, and I swear we saw huge improvements after each therapy session. Even one of the ladies at his daycare commented on it after a music therapy appt.

The Bumbo provides more support through his back, and he didn't have to work as hard after he gained neck strength. This bolster provided just enough support that he wouldn't topple over, but also made him work very hard on building his strength.

Owen is 9.5 months and he is not sitting. He can prop sit a little but that is about it. We let go and he will fall right over. We tried the bumbo but he seems to twist to the side and then fold in half so it didn't work very well for us. He constantly leans forward when we try to sit him up so he is always folding in half.

Our daughter Gabby is 10 months old. She is just starting to sit for a few seconds at a time. She has PT every week and I think she is doing well.

We used the bumbo, and it helped. We had to postion her shoulders from time to time and use blankets so she wouldn't slouch at first. We took it very slow. Once her neck strength improved we gradually moved our hands towards her hips while we sat her on our laps so she could do more work. We also would gently rock the glider while we held her hips so she would learn to adjust her muscles with movement. Once she could sit with me holding her hips I put her in a shopping cart so she could also adjust to the movement. Our "retail therapy" was kind of like riding a horse for her.
The boppy was never enough support and an exersaucer pushes her hips too far apart so we never used those much.
Clara was sitting unsupported around 11 months, which is 8 months adjusted for her. But she couldn't do tummy time until she was 9 months old so her upper body strength is still weak. We had to sit her up, and she would get frustrated b/c she knew what she wanted but couldn't do it. Even though she seemed motivated, it took over a month for her to sit for an extended period of time. She just started sitting by herself last week! I had to move her arms and legs through the motions until she caught on. It took about a week and a half after we started doing this. We did the same thing for rolling, and have started doing it for crawling/walking.
Watch out! She's already fallen off the bed! Now that she knows what to do we can't keep her from trying to sit up all the time.

Cameron is 8 1/2 months and not sitting. We use the bumbo and he tolerates it for a few minutes only. We have to use blanket rolls in the bumbo beside his hips to keep him from sliding to one side and slouching. Our PT is not concerned, she thinks that with the heart operation, he is just now regaining his full strength. He has only learned to hold his head up well for a couple months now.

We started Carson in there very early. Our PT had us adding a hand towel to make it snug enough to keep him from folding over. You may try that. It worked for us. Good luck.

Koby sat unsupported at 7 months, very steadily. He litterally went from falliing over immediatly when we let go, to sitting.I think he had to just realize he could do it!-Courtney
