I have one of these. I used it for Henry when he was 2 and again when he was 3. It's definitely nicer than lugging around a carseat, but there are a couple of negatives.
1 - the strap in the back that goes around the airplane seat makes it impossible for the child to lean their head all the way back. It does not lie flat against the seat (at least in the planes we flew on).
2 - because there is nothing between the child's legs, like in a carseat, the child can slip down.

These may only be problems with younger, squirmier kids, but I was a bit disappointed.

We have one. We got it before Ethan's MAW trip to Florida. Our first flight, we didn't have any problems, but we did on our connection. The flight attendant said that they weren't FAA approved. I assured her that it was, but she insisted that it could kill Ethan and decapitate him if there were an accident and that even though it says it is FAA approved, it really isn't. It was ridiculous.

We had the same issue with the neck. I think short flights, this is good, but the comfort level isn't great for longer flights.

Oh that's what they are! When we booked our flight to Aus, it said children under.. whatever age... had to be in a car seat approved for air, or a CARES restrainging device. We had troubles in Aus with our carseat, they said it wasn't approved even though we had just been using it on the 14 hour flight over. They were even all Alliance airlines.. ugh!

We had one like that which had a back. It never fit really well but would stop the child from going flying. I just take the carseat because I will need it when I get where I am going anyway. BTW most European airlines have a harness for babies. It is a figure-8 seatbelt extender that attaches to the adult's seatbelt. Again, not a carseat but will prevent the baby from flying off parents lap.

I have one too. I've only used it once when my daughter was barely at the minimum required weight. It was a bit hard to adjust to prevent her from falling underneath but we got it to work by making it extra tight. We checked with the airline and printed their policy regarding the harness to prevent problems with flight attendants. It is not as comfortable as a car seat but we had a car seat waiting for us at destination and the flight was only 4 hours long so we thought it was worth it.
