Hello friends
I'm new to the forum and I need your prayers. I have a 12 year old daughter her name is Heather, she was born with downs syn. The first part of her life she spent with her mother my ex.My wife now and myself always made a long trips to get her on weekends it was pure hell dealing with the ex then. Then 4 years ago her mother went into the hospital and did not come out, she passed away, so I now have full custody of my child. She has been with me and my wife (her step mom) which she calls MOM ever since. My wife now loves her as her own, and Heather calls her MOM! My wife works and I stay home doing the Mr. MOM stuff getting Heather ready for school and on the bus, doing the house work and most of the cooking, then getting her off the bus. This helps us with not having to pay ungodly amounts of daycare fees, but it has its price. I feel agoraphobic anymore since I have been in our RENTED Shack 4 years doing this!
I rarely go anywhere outside of the house, oh an occasional run to the grocery store on weekends maybe but then right back home. We only have one car.
I LOST MY TEMPER WITH MY DAUGHTER THIS MORNING AND WELL I FEEL LIKE HUMAN CRAP RIGHT NOW.
Sometimes I forget to slow down and dont remember that she needs extra time. I forget she has downs and is slower than the rest of us.
Has anyone else ever had this happen? I feel so low right now.
Heather is full of pure love and lately I have been under stress beyond belief. I could not live without Heather in my world. I need your Prayers to help me through these difficult times. I dont know where else to turn but to here where people may understand me and whats happening due to having similar situations.
I look forward to having new friends from this forum. Its is so nice to have someone to talk to and have there who understands.
PLEASE PRAY
Thank you
Heather's Dad

Hello and welcome... Heather is beautiful! We all have moments as parents that we are not too proud of, but you have to get over it and move on, promising yourself you'll do better next time. It sounds to me like you need some stress relief. What do you do during the day while Heather is at school?? Perhaps you should take some time for yourself, even if it's just to go outside and walk around the block. A clear head is always a good thing... Hang in there.... this too shall pass.

Hi, welcome. You are human, we all are and we can lose patience. Is Heather involved in any activities socially. Just thinking of some time that you can have to yourself as well. Be sure to take time for you.
She is a beautiful young lady and very fortunate that you and your wife have given her such a stable home, rented or otherwise.

Well Thank You all for the response and the warm welcome and kind words.
Sometimes I do forget I am human, I guess we all do on occasion. It is so nice to be here with others in the same boat. I do really think that God does not just give downs kids to everyone and sometimes I don't know why he picked me to watch over his gift, BUT I'M GLAD HE DID PICK ME!!!!
Heather bowled in her first SO a few weeks ago and had as much fun as you can have it was her whole class for her school, my wife and I had a great time. Heather was hanging out with her class mates before they started and i was sitting at a table by myself and another handicapped girl sat down at my table and gave me a look and i asked her if she needed help with her shoes, she nodded yes, so I helped her get on her bowling shoes, she grinned and then went to her team. Sometimes it is like you just know what they want without speaking a word!
There were a lot of kids there who use sign I wish I knew how to sign so I could have talked to them!!!
Thanks again everyone
Heather's Dad
Charlie

My daughter Angela is 13, and man...her behavior can be beyond difficult sometimes. I'm not always the best about keeping my temper in check. We do have a lot of supports in place for Angela, including an in-home behavioral support teach. They help me figure out the behaviors, what's causing them, and how to manage them. Most of the time they're helpful, but sometimes I still feel lost.
It's great to hear your daughter is involved in S.O. Angela does S.O bowling as well (along with a lot of other sports!) and she absolutely loves it.

Sending hugs your way, go easy on yourself, being a parent is hard no matter what! Do try to find something for you, maybe a hobby, part-time job during the day, something for you, it might help, we all need to have something we do for stress relief, etc.

I understand. Sometimes I get really frustrated with Talitha - she is beautiful and generally the light of my day but she can be incredibly stubborn. I have only recently organised some respite. It is only two hours once a week but she also goes to preschool for 6 hours once a week. I need those times to be able to do stuff that I can't at other times but also I now take some time to do something I want to do. I actually watched a whole movie last time the respite lady came. It was amazing. I seldom get to sit and do that. I know that the grass needs mowing, the house needs cleaning and I have no idea what dinner is going to be but even then I am taking a little time each day just for me. You need to do the same. Go for a walk, go to the movies or meet a friend at a coffee shop, do something you like to do at least once a week. We all need this.
I will also pray
