Cassie's teacher is amazing and gave us a great little tidbit of info. Permanent marker erases (with a regular pencil eraser) off laminated papers, plastic folders, filing cabinet tabs, box tape and even some plastic toys. It actually works on dry erase boards too - and we've found it works better than a Magic Eraser on them.
A huge disclaimer here - check everything before you go marking it with a permanent marker, and test it out on a hidden area before you try this! But hopefully you'll find, like we did, that this opens up a whole world of practice pages, saves money on filing folders, and helps to clean up messes.
We've been having fun with tracing work on dry erase boards; she can use a dry erase marker and eraser without disturbing the permanent marks, and we can remove them when she's ready to move on to the next activity. We also put tape over the answer lines in worksheets so she can do them over and over.
Just thought I'd share!

Thanks for the tip - my kids LOVE LOVE LOVE markers - I try to steer them toward crayons or colored pencils, but for some reason they love the markers. Occasionally one of the little ones will get a hold of a permanent marker even though we only have a few and they are well hidden. Seems like they know it is a permanent marker - off they go to write on the walls and furniture -uggh!! I remember losing half of the deposit on our first apartment 20 years ago because of this! Oh the joys of raising children.

Ok now I did believe you when I read your post here, and just went and grabbed the eraser. Someone took a black marker and put some nice black marks on my kitchen table down by the legs, and I just erased them. Just like magic !!! One more reason why I love this board !!! Again thanks. I'm off to go erase all my marks.

so you're just using a regular old pencil eraser to remove permanent marker ink from objects? Very cool!
I have a hard time getting dry erase marker off - I'll have to try the regular eraser over some old dry erase areas!

Isn't that the coolest thing?! I can't take any credit at all for this - it's 100% my daughter's teacher's suggestion. I just figured that since I use it all the time now to make my own dry erase sheets, it may help someone else.
I'm right there with you, Maureen - it only takes a second and that mark is there. Yikes.
Christine, I honestly didn't completely believe her either, and was pretty amazed when it worked. I'm glad it fixed your table.
Anara, it's just a regular old pencil eraser; it kind of rubs the marker off into flecks. It doesn't seem to work as well on dry erase marker as it does on permanent marker, though a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works wonders on those old dry erase marks.

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers are amazing!!! Crayon drawings on the walls???? No problem.
Thank you for the pencil eraser tip for permanent marker. That is certainly going to come in handy.

I am totally going to pack that tidbit away for future use! I have plenty of washable markers for my kids to use when their need for creativity arises.....yet they always seem to bypass them and find my stash of Sharpies!

Just want to let you know that as of this morning, I am mark free !!!
When Al got home I told him I needed to show him something. I took him to the bed room and pointed to the wall. On the wall was a 3 inch black line made by a marker. He asked who did it. I told him I did. ( you should of seen the look on his face. ) Then I said watch. I pulled out my trusty eraser, and erased it. He was like Coool. Just don't tell the kids the trick or they will be writing on all the walls, because they will know mom can fix it...lol. Good point Al.

My dh comes home with a sharpie everyday that he tries to hide but Jack has gotten ahold of it several times and I have the marks on the walls, cabinets, stuff, to show for it! I've had limited success with hairspray removing it but I'll be trying the eraser!

Just a note - crayola "washable" markers do not wash from antique silk couches. We have a beautiful old couch that was my husband's father's mother's couch - green and white silk. I brought in a professional cleaner - the best in town according to many - and he couldn't get it out. I was sick. I was desparte. I used a clorox bleach stick on the white part. It came out...
I'm glad for the tip about the eraser - thank you for sharing it!
There was an old product that worked wonders for EVERYTHING that I think they discontinued called "Ink Away" that was great...if you ever see it it is great on most fabrics...

Forgot to tell you - I did post this tip on my blog like we talked about! Seeing this post pop up again reminded me. Click on "frugal and fun home therapy tips" at the top to see it. Thanks for the great idea!
I decided last night that I'm going to start helping Clara and AR write their names at least once a day, and this tip will come in handy. I already have some blank laminated name strips. Of course, I forgot about this today, so day one will start tomorrow if I don't forget again!
I;m sensing a theme in my reply, guess I'm more forgetful than I thought!

I'm glad this has helped some of you! Cassie's teacher is so darn smart.
Christine, that was gutsy - I can only imagine the look on Al's face! And Michelle, I'm right there with you on the Magic Erasers. I love those things. Though on plastics or laminates, the eraser still works better. It's crazy - one of those things you have to try to believe.
Violette's mom - how sad that you couldn't get washable markers out of the couch! When Cassie was little, she decorated the fabric top of an expensive carousel that hubby's mom got her with those 'washable' markers, the first day she had it. We never did get the marks out. I'll have to try the bleach stick. I wonder if I could use that on the red and dye it somehow after it was bleached?
Anara, I'm so sorry I didn't get a picture to you! We finally moved, but I'm still in the 'boxes all over the house' stage. I will be so glad when I know exactly where everything is.

Talitha drew in permananet marker on the kids LCD computer screen. I will have a very gentle go with the eraser tomorrow and see if it works. It would be nice for them to be able to use their computer without having to work around the black stripe in the middle of the screen.
