Slings in the news

Every time I wear Cora in her sling I get horrified looks or comments on the danger. Henry's teacher asked me, again, if I was following the news. No, I am not. What is going on? People have been wearing their children since the begining of time. Cora is the third kid I've worn (unless you count my baby sister, that would be 4). Why is it so dangerous all of a sudden?

I heard that some types of slings have been recalled. Here is what I could find:

just be conscious of your child while you're wearing him/her. it's not the product that is necessarily unsafe, it's the way people are misusing the product that makes it unsafe. i have two slings! Smile

I don't have the recalled slings. They look terrible. I have 2 peanutshells (pouch style) and 1 ring sling that I've never used. After watching some of those youtube videos, I'm trying the ring sling again. I'd like to get away from the cradle carry (that seems to be the one that scares people), and try tummy to tummy. Maybe people will leave me alone.

The cradle carry is fine too, as long as you don't let her get too scrunched up... The babies that died had their chin pushed to their chests and their airways got blocked. You can use a folded towel to position her better if needed.
But tummy to tummy in the ringsling is my fave anyway Wink

I hate the Infantino Sling rider, the one that was recalled. It's too tight a curve and I learned real fast that Clara needed a towel roll behind her neck and shoulders because it set off her apnea alarm! It made me wonder about new mothers who might not be aware of positioning. I stopped using mine because it was too small and snug. And Clara weighed less than 5 pounds!

I have also used the Over the Shoulder Baby Holder, a sling that does not have that heavy elastic forcing it into a curve. I felt much safer and loved it, but still frequently checked Alan Russell. I switched to the Ergo Baby with the infant carrier and loved it more than a sling because I could see his face.
