Never really gave it much thought....but since you asked .......I would say a sandwich could be either made on 1 piece of bread or 2. Where I live, we have the traditional sandwich (peanut butter and jelly or ham and cheese etc) would be made between 2 slices of bread. However, there is also a sub sandwich, or a hero....which is a roll sliced and inside stuffed could be steak, luncheon meats, cheese etc. Then in that case....those types of 'sandwiches' are made out of 1 piece of bread.
In my opinion.....sandwich is the general term....and then you have specific types of sandwiches which can be made between 2 slices of bread OR, made out of 1 piece of a sub roll sliced (but not in half..just sliced enough to put the filling inside).
Hope that helps . Not sure you have the new show "The Marriage Ref' where you live.....but it's a new show developed by Jerry Seinfeld in which disagreements or discussion like this one are brought in front of a panel of 3 celebrities and 1 judge. They disucss all sides and decide on the winner.....therefore ending the dispute. Maybe your daughter and partner can get themselives on that show for fun .

Hmmmm let me see. I'd say a sandwich is made with 2 slices of bread and if you use just 1 slice then it would be 1/2 of a sandwich.
BUT... then there are open face sandwiches where there is no top slice of bread, just the bottom.
so I guess it all depends on what kind of sandwich you are eating.

I made the kids grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch today. Brodie isn't feeling well, so while I made Lucy a traditional two-slice sandwich, I only used one slice, cut in half, for Brodes.
So, both!

2 pieces of bread. 1 piece would be a 1/2 of sandwich in our house

To agree with what's been posted, and perhaps put it a different way, the answer to your question is an unequivocal "Yes!"
A loaf of bread is in one piece until it is sliced, so, technically, one - unless two loaves of bread were used from different dough production, which of course would have been one 'piece' before separation.
Using a roll - great example!
We like to eat bagel tuna melts - which either results in 2 separate pieces made from one bagel - two sandwiches, or one? Is it a sandwich at all?
Pita pocket sandwiches - one piece, cut open, stuffed with material - or two pitas with stuff in-between - I refer you to argument #1, above.
Et tu Ergo - Ergo uno.
Don't know what that means, just made it up.
HAPPY MONDAY!

"sandwhich" just means something stuck between two objects. You can use a single piece of bread and fold it (or cut it) in half. What about a hot dog bun? Those are single pieces with a slice. The hot dog is still sandwiched between the two sides, right?
So I did what any good word junkie would do, and checked to see what Webster would say:
Quote: |
–noun
1. two or more slices of bread or the like with a layer of meat, fish, cheese, etc., between each pair.
2. open sandwich.
3. something resembling or suggesting a sandwich, as something in horizontal layers: a plywood sandwich.
–verb (used with object)
4. to put into a sandwich.
5. to insert between two other things: to sandwich an appointment between two board meetings. |

Two.
One slice of bread would be an "open faced" sandwhich.

I'm on for two as well. After all the point of the sandwich was so that the Earl of Sandwich, whilst playing cards, was able to eat his meat with one hand without getting greasy. Can't do that with one slice of bread!
