Miracle of miracles! My 2 year old actually went pee on the potty at his day care last week. I've tried working with him before, and had no success. But, I always had the feeling if he just got the feeling of it he would really take off with potty training, and he has. It has been a week and he is using the potty even to go number two. He is staying dry through naps. He is even letting me know when he has to go now. But I have a question.

What now!? We have been working on the potty with Charlie for half a year, and have had very little progress. Now Calvin is cruising along, but I just don't know how this whole process goes down. He is not dry during the night yet. During the day he does tell us he needs to go sometimes, but mostly I just take him every couple hours. He can't yet get his underware up and down by himself (little boy undies have tight elastic!). Do we just keep doing what we are doing and he will eventually move into more independence with it all--eventually learn to hold it, or use the bathroom, at night? I didn't read any books, it just happened, and now I don't know what to do!

Anyway, this is a huge blessing to us with our third baby on the way. I was afraid of having quite to many children in diapers, especially considering all the laundry that would be with cloth diapers. And, Charlie is getting great peer modeling right here at home now. Anyway, thanks all!

I'm guessing, yes....keep plugging along like you have been & he'll be out of diapers in no time. Some kids take alot longer to stay dry at night, some do it right away.

My typical daughter woke up dry one morning at the early age of 2yrs, 13days old.....I sat her on the potty & she did her thing, put her in undies that day & haven't put a diaper on her since- day or night.

My 3rd child was trained (day & night) in 8 days.....@ 2yrs, 3 mos old.

Andrew (DS) was day/night trained in 3 weeks....@ 3yrs, 2 mos old.

My oldest stayed in diapers at night for a few months after being daytime dry. He was almost 3.5yrs.

AR (my TD 3 year old) did amazing with potty training at 2 1/2, even staying dry all night after a week and then the way he slept changed and he started wetting at night. We tried every trick and incentive and finally just put him in pull ups at night.

He will go through phases of accidents for a couple of days then weeks of being awesome. Early on in the potty training he went through a phase of not emptying his bladder so started having accidents right after a potty trip so we started rewarding him for staying dry instead of peeing. He has more accidents if he's constipated, too. He is still learning to judge how long he can wait to poo so most of his accidents now are tiny poo's.

We had to make him go potty every couple of hours for longer than we thought, but he doesn't like to stop playing to go and, like I said, is not always the best judge. At first potty was a game, then he got tired of it but there was no going back! A couple friends told me their sons were like this until around 5.

I do carry a travel potty and would make him go before we went into a building. Now that he can pee standing up I carry empty water bottles for emergencies. We also have a rule that if he has an accident and does not tell me when we're out the fun is over and we go home. (does not tell me is the key, we don't punish for accidents). He does not get his cookie at the grocery store until I check him to see if he had an accident.

It's supposed to be a process, not an event, so be prepared for all sorts of twists and turns.

Calvin is doing so fantastic. He is now telling us when he has to go poop, so no more poops in his underware these last couple days. I am cloth diapering him at nap, but he only needed it one time in the last week when he took a really long nap. Still in a diaper at night, but I might change that to a cloth diaper at night so he can have the feeling of wet.

Thanks for sharing your stories, it sounds like there are plenty of twists and turns and you never know how each child with respond. In some ways it is more work than diapers at the moment. I have to be on top of taking him to pee every couple hours, and that means being creative on how to get him to come to the bathroom! Like AR, the "fun" has wore off of the experience. Anyway, we'll keep pluggin' along!
