Anybody have a special bike/trike for their kiddo? I am looking into a Freedom Concepts Adventurer Tandem for Ray and I. Just wondering if anyone ever tried one or something similar (a large tandem trike with adaptive seating and gearing).

Angela isn't able to balance a two wheeler because of the stroke she's had, and seizures. We bought her a 3 wheeled recumbent bike 2 years ago. She LOVES it.
Here's the very first time she got to ride it. The shop we bought it from also put a "mommy brake" on the back so I can slow her down if I'm walking along side her. (This came in really handy as she was learning to ride. Still does, actually!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kp-EJHniP3Y

Callum has an adaptive trike made by tomcat
He loves it and it should do him for a long time.
We're just about to get the carer steering bit taken off and replaced with a brake only bit instead as he's just about got the steering down.

Are you sure he needs an adaptive bike??? Nate has been riding a regular cheap Kettler trike knockoff for years now...I believe it was under 20$ at Toys R US. He learned pretty quick once his legs were long enough for the pedals. I actually took a broom handle and would use it to push him till he got the hang of it.
Here is a picture of it July 2009

right now Chloe is riding a bike with training wheels and does fine with it. She also has a big trike she can still ride since she is so small. I figure it will be a few years before she will need a bigger 3 wheeler. she was 7 in Jan but still is about 45 lbs. She still looks about 4.

We just went to the Abilities Expo in NJ today and Ray got to ride the Adventurer Tandem and a Discovery bike, both from Freedom Concepts. He refuses to pedal a standard tricycle at school or home, but he was trilled to ride the Discovery by himself and I could steer from behind (when I could catch up with him!). We're really looking for a way that Ray and I can ride together with him actually getting to pedal instead of just being a passenger in a trailer. The tandem is great for that, but it's a heavy bike and he can't reach the pedals yet. The Discovery was cool, but I'd have to walk behind. Triaid has a trike that converts from an adaptive trike to a tag-along trailer. I really wanted him where I could see him, but the cost of the tandem is prohibitive.

WE GOT THE BIKE!!!!!!!
Hasn't been completed and delivered yet, but the fundraising part is DONE!
Our generous friends and family and more than a few complete strangers cooperated to raise $3100 toward the cost, and then the First Hand Foundation picked up the rest of the bill! Just got the email Wednesday night and the bike is being built! I'll post pics when it arrives!

We got one bike for our son from missioncycles in the UK
http://www.missioncycles.co.uk/disdetail.asp?Products_Action=Find('ProductID','331')&Products_Position=FIL%3ACategory%3D%27ChildTrike%27ORD%3AABS%3A1KEY%3A331PAR%3A
it is a black BMX style trike which is very well made. It also looks very "cool" so while it is obvious it is different than other kids bikes l think most kids will be wanting to try it out. Onni is able to steer and sit up ok but with the normal bike with stabilisers it was so wobbly he did not even want to go out on his bike. Now he seems very happy so we can practice approrpriate steering (not just aiming for puddles) and peddling before graduating to regular bikes.

How do you know if/when they need an adaptive tricycle or bicycle vs. a regular one?
Do y'all think it's always a good idea for them to learn pedaling on a tricycle first before going to a bike with training wheels?
Trying to decide what to get our 5 year old for Christmas - tricycle or bicycle with training wheels....

Striders and Skuuts are the rage at just about any bike race these days for kids too young to ride a full size bike.
I bet any of your kids would jump on this thing and blow your mind within a very short time period. The balance bikes provide the correct learning environment for your child. First it focuses on momentum which is key to balance. Then it also adds steering, which forces you to adjust your balance and keep the momentum. Stopping and starting are done with feet. Eventually kids learn that they can coast for long periods of time by simply holding their feet above the ground, and that puts all of the basic components together. Momentum, balance, steering.
Once the balance bike is too small, consider purchasing a full size bike with the pedals and or cranks removed. Now the focus can shift to learning a new momentum due to the larger wheel diameter, and learning hand brake operation.
Eventually the pedals are added, and the bike is ridden in a traditional fashion.

Final warning, you parents better start your running intervals after reading this post and before ordering.

I need to get the bike pics up but I'll need more time to figure out how to do that.
It has been a great thing to have the Freedom Concepts Adventurer Tandem! We used it to ride to the craft show in town (they close main st and have it in the street) and the fire police were so enamored by our contraption that they let us ride it through the show! The gearing made it no sweat to slowly pedal up the gradual hill through town! We did the same trip, adding a few blocks, for the Memorial Day Parade. While the heat just about did me in the last 15 minutes (95 in the shade), it was still a pleasant ride. The basket rack means I could tote along the Igloo drink cooler, the diaper bag, my purse and my crochet bag, and the blanket to sit on! Got lots of compliments along the way too.
I really hope that more folks take the challenge to raise the funds for a bike they can use. Even if it has only minimal value for the physical activity, the major bonus is the social value because now instead of folks turning away from your child, they gather around with intense interest, waving with smiles as you go past. If nothing else, the morale boost for the kid (and/or mom) on the bike is totally worth it![/img]

We just bought a trike! Its a small adult one. We went to a bike shop and ordered it. It was $349. We got it for him for his birthday and poor kid his feet do not reach the peddles. We ordered some blocks from the bike store! Got to go pick them up! We love the bike. I would rather have one like it instead of the bike I have! LOL

How much do these special bikes cost? Has anyone received help financially for one of these bikes?
I like the idea of Walmart having the large tricycle, but Kayla has been learning on regular bike with training wheels for the past few years.

We haven't gotten to use Ray's bike as much as we planned as the summer weather was fairly severe this year. We did go in to the library a few times. But we had some problems with it - it's not built to do hills, so when I put too much pressure on the pedals to make it up a decent hill, the gearing starts to slip. At one point while going up a hill, we broke the welds right off the drive wheel. After a few months of pestering, we got the replacement part from Freedom. But it's starting to have the same problem again. It's built for mainly flat rides, something we just don't have much of around here.
We did get Ray a 16" kids bike with training wheels. He likes to sit and pedal, but he lacks the leg strength to go up any kind of incline. He also is fairly clueless about steering and braking, so downhills are exciting. Maybe in a few years he'll be stronger.
If I could be assured that he wouldn't fall off, I think a pull-behind tandem addition might be a better option for our kind of terrain. Or once Ray has the ability to help with the power, the special bike will be good. But when it's just me pedaling on hills, the big bike is not the best option.
Ah well, we still try to use it when we can. And whenever we are out and about, we get lots of smiles and interested looks and questions when we stop. If nothing else, it's a great conversation starter! And the other boys are getting big enough to take my place on the back of the big bike. Maybe since they are lighter, it will work better on the hills. I'm sure that with my weight plus Ray, we're quite close to the max limit of the bike! Freedom has a new tricycle tandem out with a lighter frame. Still a neat machine! But the basic adult tricycles have the price and availability advantage.
