Life with a Dual DX

Is not fun some days.... today was one of those days... I am sure the DS might come into the mix... but it was just a yucky moment for Kevin and Russell.

They attempted to do the Father-Son Bowl With Albert Pujols...and well... not even 10 min into it they had to come home. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Seems Russell did NOT want to be inside there... he was FREAKING OUT with Kevin... Kevin tried and tried to pick him up to see the bowling and Russell ran for the door EIGHT times. The only person my husband saw was our DSA director who was trying to talk to Kevin and Russell and Russell was soooo upset there was no coming out of it. For some reason Russell didn't want to be there... don't know why.. but he was extremely upset Kevin said. He said everytime he picked up Russell he stiffened Sad And Russell has bowled before and LOVED it so we thought nothing of it... guess we forgot about the Dual DX.

You should see my husband... he is SOOO upset. He has never done any "father son" event with Russell and is just heartbroken. Russell? Downstairs playing with sissy's piano... It was like he was neeeeeeeding music really bad. When we came home he was asking for Music. For some reason the day and event was too much for him. He has been acting up alot today... like he has been bothered today... I don't know if he doesn't feel good or just on overload... can never tell with him... he gets upset for reasons we don't know alot... again... it's just how it is here somtimes.

These are the days we dislike all the issues that come from having a Dual DX. (Dislike ALOT)

A. Crying or Very sad

Oh man, do I feel for your husband. I'm sorry it had to happen at a father son thing, where he just wanted to do what everyone else gets to do with their sons. Hang in there guys....

I am sorry it didn't work out! I know Colina nd Eric had so much fun. I wish I had know you were going (I am such a moron for gorgetting to ask)

How about we work on bowling a few times before they all go back to school. It really is a hard one for most of the adults I know with autism.

You know- he really is stressed a whole lot with all the house showings, and visiting grandma to they can show it. It is really throwing him off his groove.

After everything settles down- lets send him and our dh's out to do something!

Hugs to Kevin!

ps- there are still a few spots in the zoo class- Eric is taking it with COlin (I have decided it is time to do these Father / son opprotunities and I will keep making them at least 1 every month or so!)

I find that a lot of times it is the sheer size of the event that overwhelms Mikey. I sometimes think that when Mikey is nervous that loud noises, especially indoor noises, get amplified to the point where he simply can't endure them.

Bene does not have an autism diagnosis, but she, too, can't stand loud, big events with a lot of fuss and a lot of people. She'll be miserable... And other times, she'll love it, out of the blue. Like Russell, Bene too, gets upset for reasons we don't always know or understand. Is this something that is typical of autism?
Bene has never even been properly examined with this, and she's been having things/doing things that have made me wonder more times than I can count. She CANNOT leave a door open, she HAS to shut it. If she thinks something is laying crooked, or not in it's place, she'll flip if we don't let her fix it. Just little things, like keeping the cap OFF the ketchup bottle while we eat. Nope! Not if Bene's at that table. She'll be so busy putting that cap back on after everyone's put ketchup on their food (we have 6 kids who love ketchup) she hardly will have time to eat her food. Everything HAS to be done HER way and in the order SHE decides. I thought it was just Benes little extra chromosome and the fact that she's so darned stubborn that is the reason for this, but maybe I'm wrong? So I'm asking the opinion of you guys in here who have kids with DS and autism.... Should I try to have her checked further?

Solveig

thanks guys.. and thanks Jane... I will copy what I posted on Unomas so I don't have to type it again.. on what I truly believe the issue was on Sat.

What I *THINK* might have happened is that first he didn't have his boombox for a week. He then resorted to sissy's big keyboard for a week that did the trick. THEN on this past Friday I bought him a new boombox... from Aldi's. He was SOO excited to have his music back and probably truly needed that "fix" if you know what I mean. Then.. come to find out.. the boombox was very cheap and didn't play right... so he has been VERY frusterated with it on Friday evening and Sat when we tried it again. So.... even though he had the keyboard...it's not the same for him. So... yesterday we went peach picking.. it was hot..long ride home and he was aggitated... and came home and he NEEEEEEDED to stim to "get back to Russell"... and he wanted his boombox.. we tried it and it was still not working... so... the day progresses.. he just isn't himself and then we try the bowling and that just wasn't what he wanted.

Kevin said the closer they came to home.. the more excited he got (hand flapping fun LOL) and he came home and he still wanted "music".. we asked him what he wanted and that is what he wanted... the keyboard wasn't doing the trick.

So... my 2 cent theraputic observation was he couldn't STIM and was aggitated and NEEEDED it, KWIM? So.. I think the day was a bust no matter how we sliced it.

*********

I hope that makes sense... and if it doesn't.. it does to me so that's all that matters! LOL I am still learning alot recently about the Autism and Sensory issues and just how it does effect children, specifically, Russell. I have been reading more and I think I am "getting it" a bit more recently.

Jane.. I too realised later I never asked your DH and Collin were going bowling. Even my MIL asked me and I didn't know. Sad Russell has bowled before with S.O. but it was only his class.. no other person in the place so he actually loved it. I really didn't think he would becuse typically, indoor, loud and dark doesn't jive with Russell. This is our life... we are use to it... it's just heart breaking sometimes! I did cry come Sat when I realised after seeing the stuff Kevin brought home.. the fun stuff there.. and well, I was feeling sorry for myself. It happens.

Solveig....I posted a similiar response in the other thread just started so you can read that one too... but it can be common for kids w/DS to have sensory issues or similiar things to Autism but not be Autistic and/or on the spectrum at all. I'd say if it's sensory they can be worked on the same and if you truly are concerned... a good Devel Ped or Ped Neuro that knows alot about Autism and DS would be a place to start. You can also search the web and look at the criteria for Autism... is it posted here at all? I haven't checked but I think we did post the criteria or talked about this in another thread awhile back. There is alot more to Autism then just the crossover stuff ... well, for us it is.

Hugs.. and thanks to all that responded...

A.

Catching this a little late, but just wanted to sympathize.

It is so sad when we want to give our kids a memorable experience and it just doesn't work for them.

Poor Russell and poor Mom and Dad.

But you have already figured it out. Lucky boy.
