Hi! I have been reading posts now for a little over a week, and finally feel ready to post myself. On June 29th I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy boy, Owen. Owen weighed 9 lbs 3 oz and was 19 inches long. Owen has Down syndrome. It was very hard to tell at first, and waiting for the results of the chromosone analysis was the LONGEST week of my life (in which I had convinced myself that he didn't have it). We are all still pretty much in shock, but are truely very lucky as Owen's heart looks good. We are having some trouble getting Owen to pass a hearing test, and are going for a two hour test in a few weeks, which should, finally, give us some answers.
In addition to Owen, we have a 2 1/2 year old son, Jason. Jason has been doing great adjusting to being a big brother. Our third "baby" is a black lab puppy dog (who will be 4 in September), and she is also adjusting ok. My husband, Donald, and I have been married for almost 6 years.

Hi Tricia and Welcome to Downsyn!!!! Congratulations on your beautiful boy Owen. I would love to see pics of all your kids (including the big black one). Info on posting pics is here: http://www.downsyn.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=16676
This place is wonderful and I wish I had found it earlier. The first few weeks/months can be really difficult as you come to terms with Owen's diagnosis and think about his future. We are here to support you and to help with any questions you may have.
Owen sounds like he is doing really well. He is nearly as big as Talitha and she is 8 months old! Hope all goes well with the hearing test.

Welcome to the board. You will love it here. There is alot of information that can be gotten here as well as alot of support. I can't believe Owen was so large. That is wonderful that he doesn't have any health problems. Hopefully the hearing test will go fine. I have heard of several children that failed initally and then had no problems. Please post pictures when you get a chance.

Hi Tricia
Welcome! I can't believe how big Own is! I, too, had convinced myself that the tests would come back negative- I told myself that his face was just all squished up from having just been born, all the prenatal tests had b een fine, his heart was okay. I think it made it even more diificult when the results came back positive. For weeks I kept thinking secretly that maybe the tests were wrong (I didn't tell anyone, they would just tell me I was in denial, which I knew I was). I think you will find many friends here to help you along this journey. Again, can't wait to see the pics.

Welcome Tricia! Congratulations on the birth of your new baby boy. My Emma was born on June 23rd, just a year ago. I found this site when she was a few months old and it is wonderful how much information and support I have had from everyone. You are gonna love it here!
When Emma turned one this year I looked back over her first year and realized how far I have come. She is so precious to me and I have found an unconditional love in myself that I didn't think I had. I believe that Owen will be a true joy in your life in a way that you never expected.

Welcome Tricia, Glad you found us! This site can be very helpful and informative. Your son sounds like he is doing very well. Avery failed her first test too, but she seems to be doing better now. WE are getting ready for another test in a couple of months and hopefully everything will be fine! It is great to hear about Owen's heart. So many ofour children have heart issues. Give that big boy a hug from us!

Thanks everyone for your responses! It feels very much like a family here on the site, and I know reading the posts over the last week has helped me greatly already. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone -- and I will try to get some pics of my little men up soon.
Thanks again

Congratulations!!! Oh do we all know how you feel about the waiting for the test result, and the "are they sure they read the result right" once you get it. But I promise, you have an amazing journey ahead of you. Our little sweetie is truly the light of our house, and makes us all better people. I can't wait to watch Owen, and you grow over the next year. And I assure you, you both will. It is amazing a difference a year makes. Can't wait to see pics.

Congratulations Tricia, and welcome Owen! I love that name. It sounds like you guys are doing alright, so glad the heart is clear.
Polly just turned 3 months and she too, has a clear heart. I understand how difficult it can be accepting the DX in the beginning. Prayers and Congratulations!

Congratulations on your new baby boy. I have a 5 month old with DS and we didn't know until we delivered. And it was very hard to accept, especially while we were waiting for the test results. I know it's hard to believe, but it does get easier. I have to say that I still have bad days, not because of just the Down Syndrome, but because it still seems overwhelming. The doctor appointments, the therapy, the co-pays. You have come to the right place, I have found this forum very therapuetic (SP?). Good luck and can't wait to see some pictures.

Tricia and family welcome to Down syn. Your story sounds familiar to mine, it took almost two weeks to get the results of my son Brock's Ds test. He was in the NICU during that time, and we had specialists telling us that they didn't know if Brock had Ds, I admit they gave us hope that he did not. But he does, and we are doing great. It is definitely something that you have to adjust to, deal with your emotions, but the love of your baby makes things so much better. Take care!

Welcome to downsyn! I am glad that you have found us. This is such a great place. Feel free to post all your concerns. People are here to help though anything.
Like you we did not have any prior knowledge of Anthony’s DS. We had three ultrasounds (one of which was a level two ultrasound) and there were never any indication of DS. He has had very little problems. When he was three days old he was having swallowing issues. We not thicken his liquids and he is very healthy. He has hit all of his milestones and keeps surprising his therapist. Sitting may take us some work as he has a hernia. But he is such a happy baby and I love him with all my hart!
I look forward to hearing more about your family.

Tricia, it is nice to hear from you! Welcome to Downsyn, I live in Richmond Heights, OH, so I am around the corner from you. You will be getting your services from HELP ME GROW, which is wonderful and have been really good to me for the past 20 mo. I love my EI, and all the therapists that come to see Daniel. Since we both live in Cuyahoga county I can tell you that you will really like what they have to offer you during the home visits.
We have a wonderful ENT, he is at Metro Health, if you want his name, let me know.
If you ever have any questions, or want to talk , PM me and I will give you my number.
Welcome again, I can't wait to see some pic's of your new beautiful baby boy! Congratulations !
