It's been a long week

Boy, have we had a rough week.

Sunday morning Hailey woke up to eat at about 4:00. I noticed she felt really warm, but I thought I had just had her bundled too much. It's been chilly here and she had a onesie, sleeper, recieving blanket and another blanket drapped over her. So, I stripped her down to her onesie and fed her thinking she'd cool down. After about an hour she didn't feel a whole lot cooler. My mom is here helping and she took her to change her diaper and said she was pretty warm yet. So, I decided to go ahead and take her temp and it was 101.4!! And that's after an hour of trying to cool down.

So, I got out my handy dandy "baby's first year" book and it said to call the pedi immediately if there was a fever over 100.4. So, I did and they said to take her to the ER just because of how little she is (she was 4 days at that time). So, I wake DH up and we pack up and go to the ER. It's funny though, I was SO calm. I freaked out over everything with Grady and now with her, I was fine. I just figured it'd be another unexplained thing.

Well, little did we know we were in for a long hospital stay. The Dr. came in and after awhile finally told us that because of her age and the fact that she had a fever already, they had to do a bunch of testing. Including a spinal tap!! A spinal tap on my 4 day old precious little baby! Ugh. I felt like puking. At that point I broke down in tears and begged DH to take her to the Children's hospital because I just did not feel comfortable letting a Dr. from our little town hospital stick a needle in her back. Good thing I did because just after the Dr. just got done explaining to me that he was the oldest Dr. in the practice and had done 400+ spinal taps, he told us he was going off duty and would be going home! So, that left us with some 30 something Dr. and there was no way I was doing that.

So, anyway, again, because of the circumstances we had to be transported to Children's. Hailey and I had our first ambulance ride and Mark went home to get some things and drive up to children's.

Thank God my sister works at Children's. She met us in the ER and arranged for Hailey to be on her floor.

So, after 3 urine catheters, various blood work, a spinal tap, 2 u/s and a VCUG (they injected die into her bladder to see if it refluxed to her kidneys), we now know she had a UTI and also had Kidney relfux.

It's pretty bad on one side (a grade 4, on a scale of 5), but the other side is better at a grade 2. She is on a twice a day dose of antibiotics right now and after a week she'll go to a once a day dose of AB's basically indefinately. Anytime she gets sick or gets a fever we have to get her to the Dr. right away and make them to a urine catheter and check for a UTI.

As for the reflux, I think for now they're just going to watch her and keep a close eye on things. They said that sometimes this can correct itself. If it did lead to surgery, it probably wouldn't be for a few years (my sister said she's never seen a kid younger than 4 have it done). We met with a urologist while in the hospital and we have to go back and see him in 3 weeks.

On the positive side, we caught this very early, but since she's so young it still could have caused damage to her kidneys. We won't know until we just keep watching things and keep having u/s's. They started her on IV antibiotics right away and the 2nd urine culture they did while there showed that the infection was done already.

It was a hellish 4 days in that hospital. DH had to go back to work on Monday so I was there by myself quite a bit. It's so hard to see your baby go through that stuff (DH and my sister went into the spinal tap with her, I couldn't do it). By night number 2 I was just losing it and could not stop crying. My OB had to call me at the hospital and ask how I was and make sure I was taking care of myself after just having a c-section. Night number 3 I decided I'd had enough and DH called off work and stayed with her and my sister came and got me so I could go home and see Grady. I missed him so much. I think that was one of the worst parts. I had 3 feeding worth of breastmilk and she had to have a bit of formula but she did fine and I felt better after a night at home, so it worked out good.

There's more various details, but I just wanted to let you all know what's been going on with us and why I haven't been online much. Please keep my baby in your prayers and hope that she doesn't get too many infections and that her kidneys correct themselves so she won't have to go through surgery.

That was terrifying I am sure. Hopefully this is all over now and she will not have any more problems with it.

That is awesome that Grady is walking!

So sorry to hear she has been ill. Hope everything clears up soon. Make sure to get rest yourself- you don't want to get sick on top of everything else.

Kathy.....I'm so sad. This was supposed to be a relaxing time of getting to know Hailey. But thank goodness you knew to insist on the children's hospital. I'm glad you have answers and treatment.

Terrific news on GRADY. Go man GO!!! Yay!!

I hope this week will be peaceful. We want pictures.
Love ya,
AMY

Kathy, I'm so sorry you and Hailey had to go through all of this. You would think after having Grady you deserved and easier time with Hailey. I'm glad you insisted on going to Childrens. I hate spinal taps too. I just can't watch them do that as it hurts just thinking about it. Give her a hug for me and take care of yourself you still have to heal too. Congratulations on her birth and on Grady's walking.

Congratulations on Hailey and Grady walking!!!! Sorry to hear things have been tough but you did well picking it up so quickly and she is getting the treatment she needs. I am not surprised you were losing it having all that happen so soon after having her. I will keep her in my prayers praying that her kidneys correct themselves and no surgery is needed.

Kathy

Congratulations on the arrival of baby Hailey. I missed that post!

Grady is walking....how wonderful! Robert is not far behind him.......it's great.

I'm sorry you had such a scare with Hailey. I had a similar issue with my daughter Hannah. Our paed doctor told us diseases cross the placenta on day 3-4 and it's only than that problems are visible. Hannah need the spinal tap as well, but nothing showed in her tests.
Our paed doctor told me she felt Hannah was dehydrated cos I was dehydrated during her delivery. She told me she sees two or three babies with that problem but only in 'heat wave' We never have heat waves in Ireland!
I know how you felt....it was a very scary time of us...and we were first time parents!

It's amazing how much expectations we have of things going right.....when in reality my two deliveries have had problems...and I lost a baby in week 12 between the two deliveries.

I guess what's the most important thing is there was medical help when our kids needed it...thank God!

I hope the antibiotic starts to work and you can settle into family life with Hailey and Grady too!
Best wishes to you all!
