Girly question-sorry men!

I went for my yearly gyno check up this morning. I have been having some really heavy and long cycles for about a year and it is getting increasingly annoying. Since I am done having kids(husband already had the big V) Dr recommended a procedure called abalation(nova sure endometrial abablation)Basically they do a procedure where they almost cauterize the lining of the uterus. It is supposed to make your cycle much lighter and some people never get a period again. The Dr acts like it is not that big a deal and can do it in outpatient surgery. The only other issue is she found a fibroid and is going to do an ultrasound next week to take a peek and make sure it's not too huge. She said as long as it's not too big I can still have this done. Has anyone done this and how bad is it really?? Did it help you? Thanks!

Heather,

I have not heard of this procedure but will google. I have always had long and heavy cycles. It drives me nuts! It helped beng on the pill but as I am over 35 and smoke occasionally, I am too afraid to take them. I could benefit from this procedure as well. We are also done having babies and hubby had the "snip" shortlyafter Kennedy was born. I look forward to some posts on this. It sounds interesting!
Hope the fibroid is not too big! Please kep us posted on that!

It sounds like what my SIL had done...basically they filled her uterus with scalding hot water (that was the cauterizing part) and then when everything scars over most likely she will not have anymore periods or at very least not heavy painful ones. Well she was in A LOT of pain for about 24 hours after the procedure(she did it out patient too)...she said that the meds barely touched the pain. After that she was a bit "uncomfortable" for a few days...she said it was like having bad cramps...not as bad as labor but enough to keep her from sleeping well. But I think by the 4th day or so she was feeling pretty good. She said that she did have to sign something saying that she did not want to have any more children and she was aware that this procedure would make her unable to conceive.

I don't know anything about it, but it's funny you mention this because one of Noah's aides had this exact procedure done on Monday. When I talk to her I'll ask her how it went.

I've been hearing about it here in MN. They're calling it something like, "Her Option" or something similar.

For me...I happen to love my hysterectomy! LOL Ovaries are in tact so I get the benefit of PMS without the other part!

I was on the phone with my sister while I was reading this post. She just had this done a couple months ago and it didn't work for her. She is now scheduled for a hysterectomy on 11/1. She said the procedure was not too bad, but she is pretty disappointed she went through it only to end up with a hysterectomy 3 months later.

Thanks everyone. I see the DR again next week so I will keep you posted.

Vonda, If Noah's aide wouldn't mind sharing with you how bad it really was I would appreciate it!
This procedure is supposed to be a little better than some of the older methods of ablation. They use a metal mesh device and it delivers a electrical charge for 90 seconds to "cauterize" the uterus. It sounds like a good option but I am still a little nervous- I need to find out just what they use for a sedative before hand(like about 10 beers and a valium!)But if it helps at all it will be worth it. I am not ready for a hysterectomy-YET!

If it's like a hysterectomy, they used a spinal and tordal for me. Love that tordal! LOL
