Hannah had her tonsils and adenoids taken out Friday, she is still not eating, but drinking plenty. Has anyone's little ones had this surgery and how long did it take for them to recover and eat again?

My Hannah had this surgery when she was four. She did fine with the eating but I know she was really sore for a good ten days. She really needed to be on the pain meds for quite a while. Does Hannah have just tylenol or motrin or is it something stronger?

Russell really only had a rough time for a couple days, didn't want to eat or drink, but after that he did ok. All kids respond differently. I know alot of parents that give their child pain meds (either OTC or stronger if need be) about 30 min before trying to get them to eat and that helps. She won't eat anything? No puddings? popscicles? ect... poor thing!!!
But.. drinking is the main thing... so that's a GREAT thing if she is drinking!!!! I am sure the eating will come around. If she will drink will she through a straw? Have you tried maybe a smoothy? You could make it in a blender as thick or thin has you need it for a straw and use say strawberries and milk (we use frozen fruits) and she can get some nutrients that way? Worth a shot!
Good luck!!

They have us giving her tylenol, but I am beginning to wonder if it is enough. She doesn't talk at all yet, so she can't tell us when she is in pain.
Her eating situation is already tricky as she is hypersentive and does not eat any table foods yet, that is why we go to feeding therapy. She only eats stage 2 baby foods but is also refusing that. I think her throat still hurts her, I guess I didn't realize it could still be painful a week after surgery. I guess we were hoping for a speedy recovery, but looks like it may take the full 2 weeks to get better.

Our son had his adenoids removed less than 2 months ago. We had weaned him down from the pain meds within a few days, and then he got a LOT worse about a week after the surgery. I called the hospital and they said that sometimes days 6-10 are the worst for both adenoid and tonsil patients. They had us increase his pain meds to levels that were actually higher than the amounts he was taking immediately after the surgery. He took prescription strength ibuprofin and then two hours later took tylenol with codeine . . . followed by more prescription strength ibuprofin in two more hours. We continued with this (although we stretched things out at night) for a day or two. Then we stretched to every 3 hours for one day, every four hours for the next, etc.
For us, the pain medications made all the difference.

My Noah seems to be the exception when it comes to recovery from T&A removal. He was eating Salt N Vinegar chips 6 hours after his surgery and didn't seem to be in pain at all. Weird I know. He seemed tired and laid around for a few days, but on the 3rd day he was completely back to himself.

Ciarra did very well with the surgery, we were over cautious and medicated her pretty well the first few days. We finally realized her vomiting was from the meds, not the surgery, and when we stopped all meds on day 3, she was perfectly fine. She also ate within a very few hours, and was drinking in the recovery room. I wish we had waited on the pain meds, to see if she really needed them, but I HATE for her to hurt at all.
