MY DR. TOLD ME THAT THE DS IS NOT ENOUGH OF AN 'AT RISK' TO BE QUALIFIED FOR THE SHOT. SHE SAID THAT RILEIGH WOULD HAVE TO HAVE BEEN PREMATURE AND DS. I NOTICED THAT SOME OF YOU SAID THAT THE DS ALONE WOULD QUALIFY YOU FOR THE SHOT. IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM STATE TO STATE?
MY RILEIGH IS FAIRLY HEALTHY, NO HEART PROBLEMS ETC. MAYBE THERE HAS TO BE ANOTHER REASON OTHER THAN DS TO RECEIVE THE SHOT.?
I OWN AND WORK AT A DAYCARE CENTER AND IM SCARRED TO DEATH THAT SHE WILL GET RSV AND I DON'T WANT TO INVITE TROUBLE THIS WINTER. DOES ANYONE HAVE ADVICE OR ANSWERS? HELP!!!

My insurance company only covers for babies born before 29 weeks. It doesn't matter what the diagnosis is. Marley was hospitalized in May with RSV. She was born at 34 weeks. At the time she was hospitalized, she was only 9 weeks. She remained in the hospital for 3 weeks. My insurance company was billed about $176,000. So at her 6 month check up I asked for the RSV shot. My ped. said that she just had another baby denied who was born at 32 weeks. My ped. ended up writing a letter to the insurance company basically asking them if they want to shell out another hundred thousand this year. The insurance company finally approved for Marley to have shots up until her 1st B-day, 5 total.
My point is that maybe your insurance company won't cover the shots. Perhaps you could ask your doctor to write a letter to the insurance company pleading your case.

We were able to get the shots for Carson. I think the fact that he was born with a tumor put him in the eligible category, but I am not sure.
I would contact your insurance and push your Dr.

Hannah had the RSV shot for three years but she also had open heart surgery at seven weeks old. Her cardiologist had to contact our insurance company and plead her case fror them to cover it. I really think it depends on the insurance company because it is so expensive.

Abigail had it her first year because she had open heart surgery at 5 weeks. She didn't get it her second or this year. She is healthy and doesn't get sick other then colds. When she did get it they told me that DS alone was not the reason but her heart surgery was the reason. That was the same with the flu shot . She was considered at risk because of the heart and not the DS. Good luck in getting it.

Darah qualified because of her heart defect/surgery. Our insurance covers cardiac babies and premies for the RSV shot.

Our ped wanted Cooper to get the shot, but our insurance denied it for us. He has not had any heart problems and was not a preemie either. I guess it all depends on your insurance.

Our Hannah got the shot for 1 year after her heart surgery. She had a VSD repair and her cardiologist also pleaded her case to my insurance for me and got the shot approved. They only approved it for the one year, but my cardiologist said now that she is older she is not as suseptable to RSV
