MKD: Can't put it down

This is the reaction of many, many readers (me included!). Why do you think this is so? What is it about this book that makes people want to keep reading it through until the end?

I was interested to see how everything unfolded and if there would be any resolution. I haven't read a book that fast in awhile!

Yes, I agree...I was DYING to know whether the secret was going to be told by David.

It is funny - I didn't think that Caroline was going to come forward with the secret - I thought that David would maybe eventually confess. I was surprised he went to his grave with it. But I think that is closer to what would happen in real life...in a Hollywood movie he'd come clean, but not in this book - which did a great job of recounting the lives of real people.

Once I got over the hard part about the birth and taking Phoebe to that institution (I was CRYING ON THE PLANE reading those bits), it was fascinating to watch David's family unravel. I think the secret of Phoebe was the beginning of a slippery slope that finally tore them apart.

I do not read that often, but I could not put this down. I read as if cheering on Phoebe and Caroline to have a better life then David and his family. Kind of like a "HA "

For me, I think it was in part the characters, who seemed so real to me, and so compelling. I wanted to see what happened to them. Also, the writing was so lovely, and I found myself really enjoying the actual storytelling. And finally, perhaps most importantly, it explored larger questions that seem so important to me at this stage in my life, namely: what makes a good life, how do you define success, how do people find happiness. I am always looking for ways to explore these ideas and MEMORY KEEPER'S DAUGHTER touches on all these themes.

I don't usually like reading fiction, so this book took me by surprise. I felt it offered more truth, and insight, than some of the "true stories" I have read!

Honestly, I could not put it down, because my daughter has Down syndrome. Truth be told, I thought I was going to read much more about the child with Down syndrome, her life, and all that she was as she grew into a woman. So I kept turning the pages, only to be disappointed that the story kept going back to the sick patterns of the adults who quite frankly were boring me. So for me, I was looking for this book to reveal to people the hidden truth that we all get to know. Down syndrome is not what we all thought it would be. Maybe my expectations were to high. But the author is a beautiful writer, for that I was grateful.

The REASON I picked this book up is because I have two adopted daughters who have DS. However, the reason I couldn't put it down was because of the characters. They were so alive and brilliant. I wanted to know what happened to them. I wanted to know how the story unfolded. DS took a back seat to the main focus of the book's topic, even though it was the point of fact that set the entire story in motion.

I finally finished it! I typically finish books in a day or two but I haven't had time to red much since Sadie was born. I wanted to read this book and keep up with everyone here but it took me about 6 weeks to read it! I found myself skipping ahead to get to the parts about Phoebe and Caroline. So happy to finally read through the posts here and see what everyone thought!

I couldn't even finish it. I just skipped to the end to see if there was a resolution! I didn't find the characters to be well developed...but reading all of your good reviews makes me think I should give it another shot!
