presentations on Ds at school

Hello,
Max is now in Kindergarten. It is going OK. Some days are much worse than others. I can't believe all the stuff a kindergarten is supposed to know!!

Anyway, I was wondering who all has done presentations about Ds at their school (classroom) and what all you did for it. I know this would help Max a lot at school in making friends. Can't say it is something I really want to do but that is probably just because I have never done it before. I want all the info you can give me. What books did you read, what info did you tell, etc... What kind of words should I use so that kindergartens would understand?

I would love any info!
Thanks.

I read Lets Paint the Octopus Red to my daughters classroom and I was VERY shocked at the amount of questions that followed and I enjoyed answering every one of them. Of course alot of the questions had to do with twins, but there were lots of good DS questions.

I am planning on doing it again this year as I now have two children in school.

Whatever you decide to do I wish you well and its a great step!

"Talking Down Syndrome To School" is a GREAT book also!!! It's cartoon and told by the boy that has DS in the book. I know the gal that wrote it and I guess I am partial to the book LOL I read it to 5th graders, which it's geared a bit for younger then that.. but they got the jist of the book.

Also... kindy kids really don't understand much... no matter how you explain WHAT DS is.. they really don't "get it" yet. So keep is simple. I like to keep it simple and let the kids ask questions. I do find that with kindy and 1st graders.. they tend to keep asking "WHY" because they really don't know. But I love the questions the kids ask and it's neat to see them trying to understand it all.

Also.. maybe a letter from your child's voice? A one page thing... so the kids can take it home and share it with their parents. We did that with Russell since kindy, 1st and 2nd grade. We didn't do it this year only because he really isn't included much if at all at the moment.

Good luck!

A.
