Ok, my sister is very big into animal rescue and I came across this dog and clearly...she is looking at me. She was rescued from a shelter in NC and is currently up for adoption. My instincts tell me no...but come on, she's looking at me. I've always said I would never have a dog cause I have 2 kids and that is quite enough. But, this dog is looking at me.

We don't know for sure what kind of dog she is...so all you dog experts...what do you think? Any idea of what she might be like and how big she might get? What breed? My sister was thinking a boxer mix.

I'm certainly no expert, but it looks like a boxer mix to me too.

I always said I'd never have a dog in the house. Four kids and one husband was enough work for me! Last summer we got a miniature schnauzer. I love that dog!!

I agree, about the boxer part. Just wonder about that white on her chest. It is not Labroador, but maybe.....can it be Great Dane ???? Just be prepared.

I was thinking she might be part saffordshire bull terrier.

Oh, Lisa...she IS looking at you! She loves you already!

I have no clue about dog breeds but she made me smile. She's a keeper!

Oh, she looks ornery and full of energy!! Wink

I initially thought lab and boxer mix. But I do agree that there might be a bit of pit bull in there too.

I am thinking medium sized dog. Definitely not a BIG dog. But not small either. So sticking with the very precise "medium." LOL.

Do you know this dogs history? We have a 2 year old Springer Spaniel and 12 weeks ago we adopted a young cocker spaniel who had no known history. He is a beautiful dog and we loved him right awayBUT as his confidence grew he started to bark and never stopped - it was so bad he would bark at a puff of wind or an ant!!! BUT he also started nipping people, not really biting hard but running up behind them and biting the back of the legs and then bit my daughter or the arm, he never broke the skin on any of these bites. Last Saturday he went for Nicky and I immediately made the decision that I could not keep a dog I couldn't trust so my son in law took him back to the Dogs Trust (pound) for me as I was far too upse to do so. I am still heartbroken (silly I know) and cry about him every day as I feel so guilty sending him back. I just hope the dog behaviourist will do some work with him and then he is adopted into another home that will love him as much as I do. I know now that I would never take a grown dog but will one day have another puppy.

I agree either lab/boxer or lab/pit. Based on numbers I'd say lab/pit. Doesn't really matter if it's boxer or pit. Pits (American Staffordshire terrier, or Am. Staff for short) have gotten a bad rap because of the people who've had them.

ANY DOG, no matter what kind you get, requires TRAINING. If you've never raised a dog before YOURSELF (and the dogs you grew up with as a child don't count, because your parents trained them) Then NOT going to training is a huge mistake, especially with a dog that has an unknown history/breeding. Check in your area to see what classes run.. Here, a beginner obedience class runs around $100 for 8 weeks. I always encourage people to stay in classes for the first 12-18 months. (preferably 18 because that gets you through the dog teenage years which is when problems are likely to come up that you thought you'd avoided or gotten rid of.)

I have fostered a lot of dogs, and never have had a problem. The key is training, and understanding the way a dog thinks, and how they assert dominance. A lot of people misunderstand dog dominance as aggression, and it doesn't work that way. Most of the time dogs are biting out of fear, it's very rare for a dog to bite for other reasons unless they've been somehow conditioned to do so. (like fighting.)

Funny Lisa....we've had a lot of talk about dogs in our house these last few weeks.
We were looking at a GoldenDoodle dog on the web that was trained to work with kids that are autistic....thought one of those might be good for us!
But its just at the thougth stage.....I know Leah mentioned this bread before!

I know nothing about dog so I can't identify the one in the pictures....but one observation....his paws look very big!

Good luck and keep up posted!

looks like a pit mix to me... pits are really great dogs and have just gotten a bad rap. and they are really GREAT with kids, as long as they are trained.

I'm not a dog person at all. I'm that crazy cat lover, but I do say, this puppy is just the cutest. Love the BIG eyes. How can you not take him home with that look?

I would put my money on boxer/staffy. I think that mostly any dog can be a good dog if it is treated right and has good training. I would bring it home but then I am a pushover with animals - usually. I did say 'no' to one of Nicola's beautiful labrador puppies. We all wanted one but we are about to move house and realise that now isn't a good time to introduce a puppy into the equation. We already have two other dogs. Very Happy Not to mention 4 cats. a guinea pig, two horses and a bunch of chooks. We have already rehomed our sheep, goat and ducks but will be taking the rest of the menagerie with us.

After my sis got a dog, my daughter wanted one right away.My husband said "Black lab mutt female only" We looked on line, and saw Sophie. She's part australian shephard, from NC, was abused, brought to a kill shelter, rescued, we saw her on line and that was it for her. she was brought up to Northern Connecticut. she is an awesome dog,, She is sweet, loveable, doesn't nip, except at the cats when they try to eat her dog food, loves people, kids. Our kids were 3 and 4 when we got her, they love her too. Off my soap box, the dog looks black lab/.pit to me.

Michelle, yes...that is me LOL! My daughter has changed her mind about being afraid and has been BEGGING me for a dog.

We aren't going to get one just yet. I had a moment of weakness....but my sanity has momentarily returned. We are going to remain a pet free home for now.

Hannah is the same and thats why dogs have come onto our radar in the last few weeks.
At our local park she runs up to the fenced in dog run and keeps telling me what dogs she likes! Its pityful really......LOL!
She discovered GooldenDoodle bread and she'd love one of them....and so would we cos we have allergies, etc.

I think Leah is right....the owners and the dog need training.
I'd be first in line for that if and I say if we get one!

I do have to say that Asa LOVES his dogs. He's quite bossy with them too, it's a riot. Always pointing his fingering and saying "GO" or telling them "DOWN". He feeds them too, gets the cup and fills their bowls, then he squats down beside them and picks up the pieces that fall on the floor and puts them back in their bowl for them. It's very cute and he takes very good care of them.
