I was reading on the site about translocation ds. It says only 1 out of 3 are inherited. I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with translocation ds because my friends grandson was just born with it.
The geneticist wants to do more testing. I understand they need to do the testing to find out if it is spontaneous or inherited; but I was wondering how you felt about finding out which parent it was passed on by? What were some of your experiences and pros and cons to finding out?
The parents are young and this is their first child. Some raw emotions are present and I wonder how much this will create another thing to process and grieve.

Natalie has translocation 21:14 and we are not carriers. We didn't get tested until she was about 6 months old for exactly the reasons you are talking about. 1. It didn't matter for her health and we certainly weren't ready to start trying for number 2 yet so it wasn't really a concern at that point. 2. I was not in a place to handle if I was the carrier. Cliff wasn't worried if he was the carrier but I was just not ready to hear that it was me while still trying to process the diagnosis and fall in love with my new normal. At 6 months old we all went in and had blood drawn together and heard back a couple of weeks later that we were not carriers.
It was the right decision for us but one every couple needs to make for themselves. Some people are more need to know and need all of the info right away while others need time to process as they go. There is no wrong choice and that is the beauty of it. Congratulations to them btw!

My daughter has translocation 14-21. We got tested soon after birth, not for ourselves because that was our last child but for my brother (no kids yet), sister (has one bio child, one miscarriage, one in adoption process) , our sons and our nieces and nephews. I was almost 100% I was a carrier because my mother had a large number of miscarriages (6). It turns out I am a carrier, my sister is a carrier and my father is a carrier (we found out in that order). My brother has decided to wait for testing as he`s not ready to have kids yet anyways. We are glad we did the testing because my sister was interested in knowing and has decided to adopt instead of conceive baby 2. The fact that I tested positive helped speed up her geneticist`s referral. Not sure if that is specific to our Canadian system.
As I expected I was a carrier, the news that I actually was a carrier did not surpise me or cause any emotional issues. But I was done having kids anyways.

Mwa! Payton has translocation. Kyle and I were both tested to see if either of us were carriers and neither of us were. Had we found out ... umm, I dunno. LOL. So anyway, Payton's translocation is not genetic ... only 1/4 of them are genetic. It could be a fluke.
