People always shock the pants off of me. I try not to let them, but they just do. This one just floored me.

I was at the store with just Austin and he was in the cart. Talking and having the time of his life, when a lady came up to us and placed her hand on his head. She said she would pray for him. I was like awww, how sweet. Then this is where my jaw hit the floor. She went on to tell me that God will save him. That in a life before, he was a bad person and his Down Syndrome was his punishment.

WOW is really all I can say. Were do they get these ideas? It didn't upset me because she was so sweet and kind, but she truly believe this. I didn't say a word. Why get into a deep conversation with her about it. I just smiled, said thank you and walked away.

Good grief! I probably wouldn't have said anything either but seriously some people just need to keep their comments to themselves.

Guess the way the world is, with all the bad people in it today, our Down Syndrome community will grow to be a great big one. Hey, that wouldn't be so bad after all. Wink

My jaw would have dropped as well. I agree, where do people come up with these things.

I have story I wish I had shared with you prior...so you could have told her what my neighbor said. (Personally, I'm Catholic and don't actually believe this story...but it is a wonderful thought and sentiment..and my neighbor is a wonderful spritual woman who is raising 2 good hearted children).

So here's our story......

Our neighbor heard Daniel was born and had Ds. She saw my husband and asked how the baby was doing. He said fine...and also told him about needing heart surgery. My neighbor asked if she could pray for him and also have her prayer group collectively pray for him. My husband said of course. She went on to tell him that is her religion (and to this day I'm not 100% what it exactly is) people with Ds are highly regarded and treated as such. Their belief is years ago...when Satan and God were fighting....they put the people with Ds on the front lines of the war because they had no fear. They feel people with Ds have special souls and go directly to heaven because in their past lives...they gave so willingly to sacrifice themselves to save mankind.

So while either story isn't true......at least there are people out there who don't neccessary have the same religious beliefs as us...BUT, do think people with Ds are pretty special Smile.

Wow, I like your story much better. Isn't as bad sounding, but like you said either way, people with Down Syndrome are very special. And I'm so glad I have it my life. Very Happy Through Austin and all of your children from this board and beyond.

Oh my goodness!!!!! That is unbelievable, but it's making me laugh. Where do people get these ideas?

Emdad, You're funny!

Chrisitne,

Weren't you the one who had someone approach you to tell you about the show she watched or an article she read about pills that could help or cure your child? It was something like that.

The only comments I ever get are the " OH, Children with DS are always soooooo sweet and sooooo loving. They only want to give." That makes me cringe, because if that were true, then there is something wrong with Melissa's extra chromosome . Wink Our pediatrician calls her Feisty! LOL!

UNbelievable! Shocked Speaking of CRAZINESS, Lisa's story reminds me of something my husband heard somewhere. Evidently there are some people who believe that children with DS are an alien race Exclamation They are supposed to be the result of aliens reproducing with human women. Has anyone else ever heard of this wackiness? I was embarassed to even mention it on here before , but I guess while we're on the subject...

Unbelievable!

I have also heard that people with DS are prove that we evolve from apes> Basically we went from apes, to Ds, to the rest of us. Ds proves it, as somehow it brings us back to our original roots. Now I laugh, but when I first heard this I was so angry!

Crazy!

I was the one who had the lady come up to me and ask me if it upsets me that my son won't learn as fast as others his age. I tried looking for that post again, but the internet is being difficult today.

Amazing. I know what my response would have been.

But seriously, I have this idea that Richie is a bodhisattva (a person who attained enlightenment in a previous incarnation) who has returned out of love and compassion to lead others toward enlightenment.

At least, he's doing that for me. What a perfect vision of peace and love my Richie is.

If this ever happens to me I just pray that I can be as sweet as you were. I have had just a couple people say that they can pray over Tiana for "complete" healing. Well, My husband and I are Christians and are praying Christians, but this never did bode well in our spirit.
