Here's Kepler

Kepler is almost 7 months old. Although our older children were born in a hospital, we were blessed to have a lovely waterbirth at home with Kepler. We did not have prenatal testing which indicated DS and we weren't immediately sure about his condition. We spent the first night at home, but went to the doctor the second day as Kepler's color wasn't right due to lower oxygen saturation, and then on to the NICU for 8 days. His heart is fine and he is overall very healthy.

We have learned a great deal in the past months, and although we see that DS is not a tragedy like we initially thought, it is still a big adjustment to having a child with special needs. Kepler has already taught us alot about love. His big sisters and brothers love to spend time with him and he is a very social boy who LOVES to be face to face with people.

I'm looking forward to getting to know the wonderful people here.

Susan

I meant to mention where we got Kepler's name. He is named after the astronomer, Johannes Kepler. My DH mentioned it one day out of the blue and I liked the name although I was not familiar with the scientist.

One thing that Johannes Kepler said was this: "I was merely thinking God's thoughts after him. Since we astronomers are priests of the highest God in regard to the book of nature, it benefits us to be thoughtful, not of the glory of our minds, but rather, above all else, of the glory of God."

Kepler's middle name is Able, which was also chosen before he was born.

When we found out that Kepler has DS, this quote was affirmation that he has the right name.

We also love the stars. Greg (DH) has a telescope that he loves to use. One of our fondest memories is of seeing the Northern Lights in Wisconsin.

It is not a name I have ever heard as a first name before, and we figured it might lead to some confusion since our last name is a common first name (Taylor). Indeed it has, and it took me awhile to remember to tell people to look under "Kepler" if they couldn't find him under "Taylor." Smile

Maybe when he is older he will go by Kep, but for now, he goes by Kepler.

Susan

Susan

A big welcome to the forum!
Kepler is so cute. I love that picture of him.

We have a few things in comon......
I too have been blessed to bring my son Robert into the world in a birthing pool in our sitting room with the assistance of John and a home birth midwife.
And what a wonderful experience!

Secondly my hubbie is a star gazer as well. It's his passion but unfortunately we don't have a scope. We ordered one a few years ago but it never arrived.... long story!. He is also a member of the Planetary Society.
Never heard Johannes Kepler but I like his thinking.

I'm Linda. Robert was 2 in April. He has an older sister Hannah Kate. She is almost 8. We live in Ireland.
Nice to meet you..... look forward to hearing all about Kepler

Linda,

Did you know of Robert's DS ahead of time? I have told myself that had we known no one would have "let" us have the homebirth. I was actually planning to have a waterbirth in a hospital, but it is against all the rules here. My doctor said he thought it could happen , that he would rather ask forgiveness than get permission, but after touring the hospital, I knew it wasn't going to work. My sister had a waterbirth in September of last year, and after my brother-in-law told me about it, I knew for sure I wanted a waterbirth. We ended up with a wonderful midwife, and the whole experience was very special. I especially appreciated the fact that our DC got to meet Kepler, hold him, bond with him, before we were off to the NICU for 8 very long days, separated from our other DC for almost the entire time.

I've never been to Ireland but would love to visit. Have only read about it, seen it in movies, and of course, loved U2 for the past 20 years. Smile

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Susan

No I didn't know in advance that Robert had DS. I got quite a few hospital scan but nothing showed.

I asked specifically to check for DS cos my sister had a daughter born two years previously with DS. Who ever said lightening doesn't strike twice!

Like you said having the water birth helped me bond with Robert before his 21 day stay in SCBU. Other than low birth weight (3lbs 13ozs) he had had no other medical complications.

He is a wonderful child knee deep in the terrible two at the moment! LOL!

From the first moment I held Robert in the water I felt he is and would be supported by the universe. Hard to put that feeling into words!
